Charleston Co. Community Justice Group Seeking Volunteer Members

In a bid to bolster its efforts towards enhancing justice in Charleston County, South Carolina, the Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CCCJCC) has commenced the process of accepting applications from prospective community representatives. The Council aims to appoint three community liaisons who will bring their unique perspectives, ideas, and insights about the local justice system to the table.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

The three open positions at CCCJCC include a local graduate program community representative currently studying justice, a local community-at-large representative interested in the justice system and a designated representative from a non-profit organization. All representatives are expected to serve for two-year terms.

The Charleston County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council performs critical tasks such as tracking court and jail data, spotlighting both the triumphs and challenges of the justice system to the city’s leaders. This data fuels discussions in small workgroup meetings where these community representatives are expected to brainstorm and propose solutions to local leaders.

Workgroup Focus Areas

The Council houses various workgroups that specialize in different facets of the criminal justice system. These areas range from pretrial diversion to bond court proceedings, case disposition, and beyond. The frequency of the workgroup meetings varies based on need but typically occurs every four weeks.

Term Limit and Upcoming Events

Community representatives can serve for two terms, adding to a total of four years, after which the position is vacated for a new volunteer. In addition to its regular activities, the CCCJCC is also in the process of preparing its annual data report and schedules public meetings every other month.

The deadline for applying to these volunteer positions is slated for April 26. Those desirous to make a difference in their community by participating in this critical aspect of the justice system can click here to apply.
