Charleston Concert Choir to Present Uplifting Performance “Songs for a New Season”

Charleston Choir Set to Lift Spirits with New Concert

Charleston is buzzing with excitement! Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 16, 2024, because you won’t want to miss the College of Charleston Concert Choir as they present their latest performance, “Songs for a New Season.” Under the direction of the talented Carlos Brown, this concert promises to be a heartwarming showcase of music that aims to uplift and inspire. The choir will explore a wide array of musical styles, featuring timeless pieces from the likes of Handel, Mozart, William Dawson, and many more.

A Concert Inspired by Resilience

With the world going through some challenging times, Brown shares that the concert is designed to be a source of comfort for those who have experienced hardships or displacement. “It just kind of hit me that this concert would be one that would bring comfort and peace to those that have been affected,” he states thoughtfully. The theme serves not just as a balm for current troubles, but also as a signal that a new era is unfolding for the choral program at the College of Charleston.

Carlos Brown, who kicked off his first year at the college last year, is all about taking fresh, creative approaches to the choir’s repertoire. “I believe in creating a choral space where there’s something for everybody,” he expresses enthusiastically. With a mix of Baroque, Classical, Gospel, and Spirituals in the lineup, audiences are sure to find something that resonates with them.

Spotlight on William Dawson

One of the highly anticipated pieces is William Dawson’s moving work, “Out in the Fields.” Brown has high hopes for this performance, stating, “I’m really looking forward to hearing what the choir will do with it. It’s been one of the pieces that we worked on extensively.” Dawson was a remarkable African American composer whose journey showcases the triumph of talent over adversity. After overcoming the constraints of Jim Crow laws, he created a lasting musical legacy that the choir is proud to honor by featuring two of his compositions.

Student Dedication Shines

The students of the concert choir have been hard at work since the beginning of the semester. According to Brown, “The students are working very hard. Our morale is at a high this year; students are enjoying singing and being a part of the choral program and are looking forward to the things that are to come.” Extra kudos go out to the students who have managed to nail down about 80 percent of the repertoire even before the midterm exams! Their commitment and diligence are paving the way for a spectacular performance.
