CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston athletic department has announced David Land as the new Director of Sports Performance. Land will be leading the sports performance department, primarily working with the men’s basketball program to enhance the overall athletic performance of Cougar varsity programs for national competition.
David Land brings a wealth of experience to his new role at the College of Charleston. He previously served as the director of men’s basketball strength and conditioning at South Florida for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons. Land also held a similar position with the Iowa State men’s basketball team in the 2020-21 season.
Prior to his roles at South Florida and Iowa State, Land worked with head coach Mike Young at Virginia Tech and Wofford from 2018 to 2020. He played a vital role in Wofford’s historic season, which included their first AP Top-25 ranking, a 20-game win streak, an undefeated conference record, and their first NCAA Tournament win in school history.
Originally from Raleigh, North Carolina, Land served as the Director of Olympic Strength and Conditioning at Utah State for the 2017-18 season, overseeing sports performance for non-football sports. He has a strong background in collegiate sports, having worked at institutions such as Murray State, UNC Wilmington, East Tennessee State, Milligan College, and NC State.
Head men’s basketball coach Chris Mack expressed his excitement about Land joining the program, stating, “I am excited to announce David Land as the Director of Sports Performance. I take great pride in this area of our program as the health and growth of our student athletes is an essential part of their experience and our overall success.”
Mack added, “He’s proactive, innovative and tough. His desire to make our student athletes better isn’t easy, it’s hard work and David will get results with our team. In addition, David will be a resource for our players on and off the floor in every area of their lives. Again, I’m excited he’s here with us.”
Land’s expertise in sports performance will not only benefit the men’s basketball program but also all Cougar varsity programs. His focus on enhancing athletic performance, injury prevention, and overall physical conditioning will be instrumental in elevating the competitiveness of College of Charleston’s sports teams on a national level.
With David Land stepping into the role of Director of Sports Performance at the College of Charleston, the athletic department is poised to further elevate the performance levels of its student-athletes. Land’s extensive experience and dedication to enhancing athletic performance make him a valuable addition to the Cougar varsity programs as they strive for success at the national level.
