Charleston, South Carolina

Cole Mathis draws a two-out walk to seal the deal

College of Charleston baseball team clinched a thrilling come-from-behind victory in their opening game of the CAA Tournament against Hofstra. The Cougars secured an 8-7 win in the bottom of the ninth with Cole Mathis drawing a crucial two-out walk, stealing second base, and eventually scoring on a single by Cole Singsank at Brooks Field in Wilmington, N.C.

Cougars advance in the tournament with a 40-win milestone

The victory propelled College of Charleston to advance to a 7 p.m. contest on Friday against the winner of the game between host UNCW and Delaware. This win also marked the seventh time in school history that the Cougars reached the 40-win milestone, with the last time being in 2015.

Stellar comeback against Hofstra

The Pride initially built a commanding 7-1 lead aided by stellar pitching from Carlos Martinez, who limited the Cougars to only three hits through the first five innings. However, Charleston mounted an impressive comeback once Martinez left the game, rallying against the Hofstra bullpen.

Consecutive singles by Luke Wood, Dylan Johnson, and an RBI base hit by Tyler Sorrentino cut the deficit to 7-2 before Avery Neaves smashed a three-run homer, his 14th of the season, pulling the Cougars within two. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Mathis’ heads-up baserunning, stealing second and scoring on Singsank’s single, sealed the dramatic walk-off win for College of Charleston.

Hayden Thomas seals the deal on the mound

Hayden Thomas, the third Cougar pitcher, delivered a stellar performance by keeping Hofstra off the board over the next two innings. Thomas retired all six batters he faced, including three strikeouts, to pick up his fourth win of the season.

Key performances from Mathis and Singsank

Cole Mathis played a pivotal role in the victory with his key walk in the ninth inning, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. Mathis also doubled twice in the game. Meanwhile, Cole Singsank contributed significantly with three hits, and Tyler Sorrentino added two hits to Charleston’s offensive effort.

Upcoming game against UNCW

With the thrilling win over Hofstra, College of Charleston sets its sights on the next challenge – a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday against the winner of the UNCW-Delaware game. The Cougars will look to carry the momentum from this dramatic victory into their next CAA Tournament matchup.
