College of Charleston first baseman and pitcher Cole Mathis made history on Sunday night as he was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the MLB Draft. Mathis, the 54th overall pick, now holds the title of the highest Cougar ever taken in the draft, surpassing the previous record held by Taylor Clarke and Brett Gardner.
With this significant achievement, Mathis adds to the legacy of College of Charleston players making their mark in professional baseball. Under the leadership of head coach Chad Holbrook, the Cougars have seen a total of seven players being drafted since 2018, showcasing the program’s commitment to developing top talent.
