College of Charleston Athletics made history on Sunday night as first baseman and pitcher Cole Mathis was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the second round of the MLB Draft. Mathis, who was the 54th overall pick, became the highest Cougar ever taken in the draft, surpassing the previous record held by Taylor Clarke and Brett Gardner.
Previous Records Broken
Cole Mathis broke the record previously held by Taylor Clarke, who was a third-round selection (No. 76 overall) in 2015, and Brett Gardner, who was also selected in round three (No. 109) in 2005. Mathis’ selection marks a significant milestone for College of Charleston Athletics, showcasing the talent and potential of their student-athletes.

Mathis’ selection by the Chicago Cubs marks the second consecutive year that a College of Charleston player has been drafted, following relief pitcher William Privette’s selection last year. Mathis had an outstanding junior season, earning first team All-CAA honors after batting .335 with 17 doubles, 14 home runs, 63 runs scored, and 57 RBI. His exceptional performance throughout the 2024 campaign led to National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) National Hitter of the Week honors, with Mathis going 11-for-14 with three home runs and 10 RBI in a series at Campbell.

As a junior in 2023, Mathis was chosen for the NCBWA All-America second team as a two-way player, showcasing his versatility and skill both at the plate and on the mound.
