Coastal Flood Advisory Issued for Charleston, SC: What You Need to Know

Good morning, Charleston! Raining cats and dogs? Well, it’s not just the weather that’s a little wild out there. This morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory for our lovely city and its neighboring Coastal Colleton County.

Timing is Everything

The advisory went into effect around 3:45 AM, and it’s valid for today between 5 AM and 9 AM. So, what does that mean for you? Well, be prepared for some serious tidal action! Expect up to a half foot of water inundation above ground level along our beautiful shorelines and tidal waterways, with tidal levels hitting around 7.1 to 7.3 feet at Mean Lower Low Water.

A High Tide Surprise

Mark your calendars, folks! High tide is set to occur around 6:41 AM. This means you might see some encroaching water finding its way onto the roads. According to the NWS, this saltwater intrusion could begin 1 to 2 hours before and even continue 1 to 2 hours after high tide.

Road Conditions: Drive with Caution

Now, if you’ve got plans to hit the road this morning, be extra cautious. The NWS warns that some roads may become impassable. If you’re venturing out, allow for some extra travel time, as roads may be closed, and don’t even think about driving around barricades or through water of unknown depth! Remember, safety first!

Flood-Prone Areas: Stay Aware!

For those living in flood-prone areas or camping in low-lying regions, it’s crucial to head for higher ground right away. If evacuation orders are issued, please heed them without hesitation! Ensure your home is locked when you leave, and if you have a moment, disconnect appliances and utilities.

And, here’s a big no-no: If you see water covering electrical outlets, don’t even dream of going into that room! If you spot any sparks or hear strange noises, get out immediately! Avoid floodwaters which might be electrified—it’s just not worth the risk!

Just How Dangerous is Floodwater?

Speaking of floodwaters, did you know that just six inches of moving water is enough to knock you off your feet? Yikes! If you’re caught in a tight situation where water is rising, try to move to the highest point possible and call 911 if you can get a signal.

Hydroplaning – What You Should Know

As the rain comes pouring down, keep in mind that driving in rain can lead to hydroplaning. This is when water builds up ahead of your tires faster than your vehicle can push it out of the way, causing your car to slide unexpectedly. Hydroplaning typically happens because of:

  • Pooled water
  • Worn tires
  • High speeds

So, when the roads are wet, make sure to slow down and keep a safe distance!

Wrapping Up

So as we brave this rainy spell, let’s look out for each other and stay safe, Charleston! Keep your eyes on the skies and your feet (and tires) safe on the ground. Don’t hesitate to check in with local updates as this advisory remains in effect until 9 AM today. Let’s all stay dry out there!
