Charleston is gearing up for a quiet but chilly week as a cold front sweeps through the area, sending temperatures plummeting. After a warm and sunny fall, you might want to dig out those cozy sweaters and flannels because the next few days are going to feel a lot cooler!
The first of these cold fronts made its appearance on the evening of November 20th, dragging cooler air with it. And don’t get too comfortable just yet—another round of this wintry chill is expected as a cold front from the Great Lakes region rolls in on the evening of November 21st. According to meteorologist Brian Haines, locals started feeling the temperature dip that very morning, and it’s only going to get colder from here!
Mark your calendars for November 22nd; that’s likely to be the day when Charlestonites feel the coldest. Daytime temperatures will hover in the mid-50s, while nightfall will usher in even chillier conditions, with temperatures dropping to the mid-30s to low-40s. So, if you do have any outdoor plans, it’s wise to bundle up! And do keep in mind that temperatures may look like they’re warming up for the daytime starting on Sunday, November 24th; however, those chilly nights are expected to stick around.
If you live near the Charleston Harbor, count yourself lucky! Those close to the water will generally experience slightly warmer temperatures than folks who are further inland. Why, you ask? It’s all about how water holds heat. The harbor may be cooling down, but it retains heat much longer than our brisk air does, making it a sort of natural air conditioner or heat pump, according to Haines.
While this season has been a bit warmer than usual, with November running over eight degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal, it seems like the trend is about to shift. Haines elaborates on this by explaining, “The atmosphere is sort of like a rubber band. You have a long prolonged period of above-normal temperatures, and somewhere along the way, it’s going to snap back, and you’re going to get a period of colder temperatures. That’s just the way that it works.”
If you’re wondering if the cool weather will be here to stay, you might find some comfort in the fact that temperatures are expected to rebound by Monday, November 25th. So, hang in there—just a little patience and you’ll be back to warmer days in no time!
Whether you’re planning to cozy up at home with a cup of hot cocoa or brave the cold for some outdoor fun, make sure you’re well-prepared! As we head into the holiday season, it’s a great time to appreciate the chill while gathering with friends and family. Here’s to a wonderful, snug season ahead!
