Folly Beach, S.C. — Sometimes a storm can bring unexpected gifts. For a group of lifelong friends, Hurricane Helene turned what could have been a sour reunion into a weekend full of laughter, nostalgia, and cherished memories. What had started as a practical getaway quickly evolved into a heartwarming reunion that none of them would soon forget.
“We just needed a girl’s vacation to talk,” shared Candy Little, one of the visitors who traveled from far and wide to rekindle old friendships. “We’ve been up till like 2:30 every night just talking. You’d think we’d run out of things to say, but we have a lot of words.” Taking a break from their busy lives, these friends reunited not only to reminisce but also to catch up on everything they had missed in each other’s lives over the decades.
It had been nearly 40 years since these childhood friends had physically seen one another, even though they had remained connected via social media. “We’d been Facebook friends, but we hadn’t physically seen each other in like, what, almost 40 years,” reflected Little. “So we just decided, okay, we need to not let that much time go by. Every year we’re trying to plan something just to stay connected.”
Although Hurricane Helene brought heavy rain and gusty winds to Folly Beach, it didn’t dampen their spirits. As the storm passed, the friends found solace in the opportunity to enjoy each other’s company. “It’s beautiful with the breeze to cool you off, but you have the sun, so tomorrow it’ll be nice to get a tan,” remarked Tammy Owens, another member of the group, with a bright smile. They were determined to make the best of their time together, regardless of the weather.
The inclement weather created a cozy atmosphere, allowing the friends to share stories from their past, laugh about old times, and even share a few secrets that they had kept to themselves over the years. “And that was really what it was all about, was spending time together,” explained Little, affirming the essence of their gathering.
As the friends prepared for their much-anticipated beach day, they couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chance to reunite. Their days will be filled with sun and sand, but more importantly, they’re packed with laughter and joy. “This trip is a reminder of how essential it is to celebrate our friendships, no matter the circumstances,” said Owens, as she looked forward to the adventures awaiting them.
With hurricane warnings in the past, they have all set their sights on creating new memories in the beautiful Folly Beach. This weekend is a testament to the strength of their bond—a friendship that has not only withstood the tests of time but has also flourished through distance.
A weekend that started out with concern about severe weather transformed instead into a heartfelt celebration of friendship, reminding everyone that, sometimes, it takes a little storm to appreciate the sunshine that follows.
