Charleston’s Arts Scene Shines Bright with HALO’s Upcoming Season
Charleston, a city full of charm and creativity, is buzzing with excitement as the Holy City Arts & Lyric Opera (HALO) recently unveiled its 2024-2025 season schedule. With an impressive lineup that includes Grammy-nominated vocalist Sidney Outlaw and acclaimed pianist Warren Jones, the first concert is sure to set a magical tone for the season. Mark your calendars for September 15 at 2 p.m. when they perform at St. Johannes Lutheran Church, located at 48 Hasell St.
A Melodic Journey Awaits
The upcoming concert promises to be a delightful mix of genres and languages. Attendees can look forward to classics from renowned composers like Rossini, Brahms, and Duparc. Additionally, the recital will spotlight a brand-new English song cycle composed by Atlanta’s talented B.E. Boykin. This intriguing piece, titled “26 Ways of Looking at a Black Man,” draws inspiration from the profound words of African American poet and librettist Raymond Patterson.
A New Home for HALO
This concert also signifies the start of HALO’s residence at the elegant St. Johannes Lutheran Church in downtown Charleston. The church’s sanctuary will now serve as the cozy venue for HALO’s more intimate concerts, lectures, and recitals. Meanwhile, the larger productions will take place at the vibrant Battery Gadsden Cultural Center on Sullivan’s Island. General Director Leah Edwards shared her excitement, stating, “As a performer, to be invited back to a company is the biggest compliment one can receive.”
Edwards continued, “It’s a tremendous honor for us as an organization to be welcomed into two fantastic venues. We are stoked about the growth and collaborations ahead that will allow us to better serve both our artists and our audience.”
Growing Together
From its humble beginnings, HALO has grown into a vibrant nonprofit arts group dedicated to bridging communities through innovative and inclusive artistic experiences. This beloved organization has provided a platform for local and visiting talent to shine. Over the past four years, HALO has proudly presented four large-scale productions and has delighted audiences with countless intimate concerts at famous Charleston venues. Not to mention, they’ve also brought unique mobile concerts to various locations across the Lowcountry.
Most recently, fans enjoyed the show Singers & Stanzas, which featured original pieces created by talented Lowcountry poets at the historic Dock Street Theatre.
