Hey, Charleston! There’s a lot happening in our lovely city, and we’re excited to dive into two things that are getting everyone talking. Let’s start with something delicious—the annual Burger Throwdown! For those of you who love a good burger (and who doesn’t?), this event is the ultimate showdown among local eateries vying for the title of the best burger in town!
Yes, folks, voting is officially open! Whether you’re a fan of meaty masterpieces, veggie creations, or something in between, there are six categories you can choose from, including Best Hangover Helper, Best Faux Burger, and many more! If you’ve been keeping it local this summer and have tried some incredible burgers around town, now’s your chance to let everyone know which ones have tickled your taste buds.
You can cast your votes until October 2, so don’t wait too long! Make sure your favorite spot gets the recognition it deserves. And here’s a little tip—get your friends involved and make it a fun outing to discover Charleston’s burger scene! After all, burgers and camaraderie make for a perfect pair.
Switching gears a bit, there’s another *important conversation* taking place in the Lowcountry that deserves our attention. Recently, a new coalition of almost 200 organizations, including medical groups, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations, has formed to advocate for expanding Medicaid in South Carolina. Yes, you heard that right!
CoverSC, the name of this coalition, held a press conference at the Statehouse to rally support for Medicaid expansion. The goal? To ensure that South Carolinians, especially those earning just above the poverty line, can have access to health care. It’s hard to believe that there are families who work hard yet can’t afford any health insurance coverage! This coalition is bringing awareness to a situation that many may not be familiar with.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. The coalition is looking at the success seen in neighboring North Carolina, where over 500,000 residents signed up for an expanded Medicaid program within just six months! Can you imagine the impact it has had on those families? At the press conference, conservative legislators from North Carolina spoke about the bipartisan support the program receives, highlighting that it’s not only effective but also affordable—with the federal government covering a whopping 90% of the costs. That’s a substantial financial relief!
In South Carolina, an expansion could potentially provide health coverage for about 350,000 residents and create an impressive 20,000 jobs while generating around $4 billion a year in economic growth. Just think about how that can help families right here in our community who struggle to find affordable healthcare!
It’s important to note that while there has been resistance from some lawmakers in South Carolina, the momentum is shifting. Advocates like Sue Berkowitz of CoverSC are hopeful that sharing successful stories from North Carolina could change minds and open the door for serious discussions in our legislature.
The General Assembly is set to reconvene for new business in January 2025, giving advocates some time to keep the dialogue going. Persistence is key, and as one of the North Carolina legislators advised, it’s essential to “go back again, go back again” on this journey. Together, we can achieve considerable changes for our community.
So here we are, Charleston—a city buzzing with excitement over burgers and a heartfelt mission to bring better health care to its residents. From munching on mouthwatering burgers to advocating for vital changes, there’s never a dull moment in the Holy City. Let’s get out there, support our favorite burger joints, and keep our eyes on the prize for a healthier tomorrow!
