Hey there, Charleston! It’s that time of year again when the delicious aroma of burgers fills the air as the annual Burger Throwdown kicks off. This year, the competition is fierce, and the voting is officially open! Whether you’re a fan of the classic cheeseburger or something a bit more adventurous, there are six mouth-watering categories to cast your votes in, including Best Hangover Helper and Best Faux Burger. So, gather your friends and head out to support your favorite local eateries before October 2nd.
But the fun doesn’t stop there! If you love creativity and collaboration, you’re in for a treat. A local creative director by the name of Brelyn LeCheminant has launched a fantastic initiative called Alt Muse Collective. This event series aims to unite Charleston’s creative talent over casual networking and engaging discussions. “I’ve been working as a creative here for nine years,” Brelyn shares, explaining her inspiration for bringing together artists and freelancers. “You work with amazing people, become friends, but then you move on, and it’s tough to keep in touch.”
Brelyn’s bright idea materialized in May 2024, creating a space where local creatives can network, share ideas, and enjoy some good times. The first gathering was hosted at the charming Philosophers & Fools bookshop, and it was just the beginning! Over the summer, she introduced exciting elements like panel discussions and guest speakers, making these happy hours a must-visit.
The most recent Alt Muse event held at Silver Hill Studios was a hit, featuring Charleston’s own poet laureate, Asiah Mae, along with live headshot sessions by talented photographer Caroline Herring. Want to join in on the next gathering? Mark your calendar for September 26th, where experienced panelists will share insights on storytelling. The lineup includes big names from the creative industry, making it a golden opportunity for anyone looking to grow their network.
LeCheminant is all about building a “vibey atmosphere” that encourages connections. She understands how daunting it can be to attend networking events, especially if you’re going solo. “I suggest conversation prompts for those who RSVP alone, so they have an easier time breaking the ice,” she explains. “It’s truly about bringing people together in a fun and welcoming space.”
Every Alt Muse event is unique, ensuring that attendees always have something fresh to look forward to. Brelyn thinks outside the box, hoping to introduce niche events like drag makeup tutorials or resource nights for small businesses in the future. “Charleston has an incredible pool of talent; it’s time we tap into that!”
For Brelyn, organizing these events is more than just a job—it’s a passion project! She’s on the lookout for sponsorship and partnerships to expand the reach of Alt Muse Collective. “We want to foster an environment where people can share ideas while sipping on some wine,” she says, smiling. “It’s about supporting each other and breaking down barriers, not building them.”
So whether you’re an aspiring artist, a seasoned creative, or someone who just loves a good burger, there’s plenty happening in Charleston that you won’t want to miss. Join in on the fun, cast your votes in the Burger Throwdown, and don’t forget to check out Alt Muse Collective’s next event. Good vibes and tasty bites await!
