Charleston’s Beautiful South Introduces Sunday Dim Sum Service for Food Lovers

Charleston Welcomes New Dim Sum Delight Every Sunday

If you’re a food lover living in or visiting Charleston, we have some exciting news for you! Starting October 6, the charming downtown restaurant, Beautiful South, is launching a new dim sum service that promises to be nothing short of a culinary adventure. Available from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. every Sunday, this service allows diners to dig into an extensive dim sum menu that’s freshly curated by chef and owner, David Schuttenberg.

What Exactly is Dim Sum?

For those who may not be familiar, dim sum can be described as a delightful assortment of small plates designed to be shared at the table, traditionally enjoyed during a Chinese breakfast or brunch. The term itself translates to “touch the heart,” which fits perfectly with the communal nature of sharing. Beautiful South will be offering a full dim sum experience, complete with a dedicated tea service that perfectly complements those delicious bites.

An Exciting New Experience

Chef Schuttenberg is bubbling with enthusiasm about this new venture. He stated, “This gives our kitchen an opportunity to spread our wings a bit with a menu only offered during this single weekly service. It offers us a chance to play, experiment with new menu items, and develop an entirely different experience for our guests.” It seems like everyone at Beautiful South sees this dim sum addition as a great opportunity to engage with their diners in a fresh and exciting way.

What Can You Expect on the Menu?

The dim sum menu is packed with a tantalizing selection of dishes, making it hard to resist. Some standout items include turnip cakes, Hong-Kong style French toast, and Taiwanese custard powder chicken wings. For the classics, you can look out for scallion pancakes, Char Siu Bao (steamed pork buns), and Siu Mai (pork and shrimp dumplings). If you’re unsure what to try, Schuttenberg himself has great taste, recommending the roasted mushroom congee and griddled turnip cakes as his personal favorites.

Sharing and Tasting

One of the best aspects of dim sum is the ability to order small portions, allowing guests to taste a variety of dishes. It’s all about the joy of sharing and discovering new flavors together. Schuttenberg says, “The beauty of dim sum service is that small portions allow diners to try lots of dishes,” which is a great way to make your Sunday brunch an adventure.

A Nod to New York’s Dim Sum Culture

Before settling down in Charleston, Schuttenberg and his wife, Tina Heath-Schuttenberg, lived in New York City for about 13 years. During their time in the Big Apple, they explored a wide range of dim sum experiences and fell in love with the casual yet lively atmosphere that many dim sum restaurants offered. Inspired by the ambiance of places like Nom Wah Tea Parlor, they decided to incorporate a similar service style at Beautiful South, assuring that “over 100 years of dim sum can’t be wrong.”

Join the Fun!

If you’re feeling intrigued and hungry, why not gather your friends or family and make it a Sunday tradition? Whether you’re a dim sum aficionado or a newbie, Beautiful South is geared up to provide a delicious and memorable dining experience for everyone. So, mark your calendar, and get ready to enjoy a veritable feast that’s all about shared plates, tasty adventures, and heartwarming flavors every Sunday!
