Charleston, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as a heartfelt movement brings women of color together through fitness, community, and friendship. This is all thanks to the inspiring initiative known as Melanin Muscles Mascara Fit Club, or MMM Fit Club for short. Founded in 2018 by Charleston native Keshia Colleton, this group has blossomed into a haven for women seeking not just a healthier lifestyle, but a sense of belonging.
Keshia shared her vision for the club, emphasizing the importance of creating spaces where women can feel safe, seen, and understood. “To be able to come to spaces where we feel safe, where we feel seen and heard and understood without having to explain ourselves. So we can just be. Literally just be,” she explained. It’s clear that MMM Fit Club is more than just a fitness group; it’s a sisterhood that empowers its members to take the next step in their health journeys, all while knowing they aren’t alone.
The sense of community within MMM Fit Club is palpable. Participants have forged new friendships and often see familiar faces at various events, leading to warm greetings like, “Hey girl! How you doing? Are you going to so and so? Are you going to here?” For many, these small interactions bring a sense of comfort and joy, reinforcing the idea that they are all in this journey together.
Keshia recognizes that navigating predominantly white spaces can often feel intimidating for women of color. “If you go in predominantly spaces where we are the minority, it’s intimidating. Sometimes we don’t feel welcomed. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the truth,” she said. By curating safe spaces specifically for women of color, MMM Fit Club is addressing this issue in a positive and welcoming manner. “So it’s not in a sense of divisiveness. But it’s creating safe spaces for everyone,” Keshia added, emphasizing inclusivity and understanding.
On a beautiful Sunday morning, members gathered at Stono River County Park for an event affectionately dubbed Talk and Trails. This outing was a chance for participants like Shauntavia Johnson to commune with nature and each other. Shauntavia, who grew up in Charleston, reflected on how walking always provided her with peace. “Doing it with a group now gives the activity new meaning,” she expressed. The group environment allows members to feel comfortable, freeing them from the pressure to meet certain expectations. “You don’t feel like you’re held to a certain standard or you don’t feel like you have to put on a show. You just be you and you just exist,” she said with a smile.
This community focus is what Keshia believes makes MMM Fit Club so special. “It’s empowering to see the ladies smiling, laughing, enjoying. That makes me smile. That makes my heart know that it’s something that was purposeful and to know that it’s not just for me,” she shared. Her commitment to fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere truly shines through in the interactions among the women.
For those interested in becoming part of this nurturing community, the next Talk and Trails event is scheduled for November 10. These outings are not just about physical fitness; they’re about building relationships, encouraging one another, and embracing authenticity. As Keshia and her members continue to grow this empowering movement, it’s evident that the MMM Fit Club is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for women in Charleston and beyond.
