Winter Weather Hits Charleston: What You Need to Know!

Hey Charleston residents! Brace yourselves because Mother Nature is delivering a good old-fashioned winter experience. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for our area as we prepare for some pretty significant snow and ice.

What’s Happening Today

As of this morning, you can expect mostly cloudy skies, but don’t fret—those clouds will start to clear up later. The high for today is a brisk 31°F, with winds blowing in from the west at about 10 to 15 mph. If you’re planning to venture outside, remember to bundle up; overnight temperatures will plummet to a chilly 18°F with light winds. Sounds cold, right?

Just yesterday, there was a delightful sighting of a doe standing in the snow along Gordon Drive in the Weberwood neighborhood. It’s always nice to see wildlife enjoying the winter wonderland!

Snowfall Forecast

According to local reports, we had some light to moderate snowfall on Friday, with the highest amounts expected in our eastern mountains—talk about a winter playground! They might be looking at 6-12 inches of fresh snow, while lower elevations could see anywhere from 1-3 inches on Saturday. Snow lovers, this is your moment to shine!

Wind, Cold, and Safety Tips

Now, here’s something to watch: winds may gust up to 40 mph or higher today, which will definitely make it feel even colder. A cold weather advisory is currently in place for several areas, including western Greenbrier County, northwest Pocahontas County, and southeastern Randolph County. Wind chill could drop to as low as -20°F—yikes!

So if you’re braving the cold, make sure to layer up and stay warm. Hypothermia is a serious risk, so keep an eye out for symptoms such as a body temperature dropping below 95°F. And don’t forget, protective clothing is essential for staying safe in this weather.

Upcoming Weather and Travel Advisory

As we look forward to the weekend, skiers may be excited to hear that another winter system is expected to roll in on Sunday afternoon. This one might bring a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, which could affect travel plans. Speaking of travel, please be cautious as icy conditions may make road surfaces dangerously slippery, especially in the Tri-State area and Kanawha County.

Weather experts are predicting that single-digit lows are in store by mid-week, and those living north of the Interstate 64 corridor might experience heavier snowfall amounts. Saturday’s temperatures in Charleston are expected to reach a high of 27°F and a low of 20°F. Meanwhile, Huntington will enjoy a slightly warmer day at 33°F and a low of 23°F while Sunday’s temperatures hover around freezing.

Prepare for the Cold

Local emergency managers are gearing up for potential power outages and the risk of downed trees due to the weight of the snow and ice. Residents are encouraged to have essentials ready and to be aware of their local warming shelters. In Charleston, a warming shelter will be available at Bream SHOP located at 319 W. Washington St. from 7 PM to 7 AM starting this Friday night.
