Charleston baseball clinched a first series win of the season on Sunday with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Marshall. The Cougars relied on stellar pitching performances from Connor Campbell, Alex Lyon, and Davis Aiken to secure the win and take the series.
Connor Campbell led the charge on the mound for Charleston, going six strong innings after giving up an early run in the first inning. Campbell surrendered six hits with no walks and tallied five strikeouts to keep Marshall at bay. Alex Lyon and Davis Aiken then combined to throw two scoreless innings to close out the game and secure the win.
Marshall jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, as Tre Hondras led off with a double and was brought home on a productive out by Owen Ayers. However, the Marshall offense was held in check for the rest of the game, thanks to the strong pitching from the Cougars.
The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the third inning when Kevin Madden drove in Cole Mathis to even the score. Charleston then took the lead in the sixth inning when Mathis drew a bases-loaded walk to bring in the go-ahead run.
Despite several scoring opportunities, Marshall’s pitching staff managed to pitch out of jams and keep the game close. Charleston’s pitching staff, however, proved to be up to the task, shutting down the Marshall offense in the final innings to secure the series win.
Key contributors for the Cougars included Kevin Madden and Dylan Johnson, who both registered two hits in the game. Madden drove in a crucial run, while Mathis scored the tying run and picked up the winning RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
The Cougars will look to complete the four-game series sweep against Marshall tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. The team will aim to carry the momentum from their series win and finish strong against their opponents.
