Charleston Welcomes Makan: A Journey Through Malaysian Cuisine

Exploring the Flavors of Malaysia in Charleston

Charleston has recently welcomed a vibrant twist to its culinary scene with the opening of Makan, a cozy Malaysian restaurant that invites diners to discover the rich and diverse flavors of Malaysian cuisine. Located in the heart of downtown Charleston, this hidden gem offers a delightful selection of dishes inspired by the streets of Malaysia, promising a unique dining experience worth exploring.

Meet the Chef Behind Makan

At the helm of Makan is James Wozniuk, an enthusiastic chef who has spent years traversing Southeast Asia, immersing himself in the culture and cuisine of the region. Raised in Greenville, South Carolina, Wozniuk was drawn to the flavors of Malaysia after multiple trips across the region, including stops in bustling cities like Kuala Lumpur and the UNESCO World Heritage site, Penang. With a deep passion for these culinary traditions, he opened Makan in June, marking it as Charleston’s sole Malaysian restaurant.

A Culinary Journey

Wozniuk’s journey into Malaysian cuisine began over a decade ago while working at Maketto, a Southeast Asian restaurant in Washington, D.C. There, he dreamed of bringing authentic Malaysian dishes to Charleston. After gaining recognition for his culinary skills and receiving a Bib Gourmand award from the Michelin Guide, he felt ready to share the flavors he adored with South Carolinians.

What’s Cooking at Makan?

The menu at Makan reflects Wozniuk’s commitment to authenticity while also appealing to local tastes. Diners can find a variety of flavorful dishes, each with unique twists. Popular items include Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried noodle dish that has been a staple of Malaysian street food, and Mee Goreng, which boasts a delightful mix of Chinese lo mein and Indian spices. Each dish is crafted with precision using fresh ingredients and features a breadth of spices that make Malaysian cuisine so exceptional.

The culinary adventure begins with appetizing shareable plates. From flavorful char siu wings to crispy fried potatoes and chicken skewers served with rich peanut sauce, the small plates are perfect for those who love to taste a little bit of everything. Not to be missed is the bak kwa, a type of Chinese pork jerky that offers a smoky sweetness in every bite, served alongside a tangy sambal oelek that adds just the right kick.

Signature Dishes to Look Out For

For those brave enough to delve deeper into the spice cabinet, Makan has plenty to offer. The ayam mesak merah is a fan favorite—a tender chicken dish simmered in a rich red sauce and served with fluffy jasmine rice. Patrons rave about the sweet and spicy pineapple curry, which is always a delightful balancing act between sweetness and heat.

Another crowd-pleaser is the spicy Hakka noodles, inspired by the famous chili pan mee from Malaysia—a perfect blend of textures and spices. This dish features crispy anchovies, crunchy mustard greens, and ground pork, combining to create a truly delightful experience that transports diners straight to a Malaysian hawker stall.

A Taste of Local Connection

Wozniuk has skillfully curated a menu that, while undeniably Malaysian, resonates with the local palate. As he notes, “I’m not trying to do fusion. I want to get it as close to what I was eating as possible.” This dedication shines through in every dish, making Makan not just a restaurant but a culinary journey through Malaysia.

Join the Fun!

If you find yourself in Charleston, make sure to visit Makan and experience the delicious adventure of Malaysian cuisine. With its warm ambiance, friendly service, and a menu packed full of flavor, it’s the perfect spot for food lovers looking to expand their taste horizons.

Eating at Makan isn’t just dining—it’s stepping into a world of vibrant Malaysian streetscapes, where every dish tells a story and every bite is a celebration of heritage and flavor. Be sure to bring your appetite and prepare for a taste sensation!
