Charleston Welcomes Christen Cunningham to Men’s Basketball Staff
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston’s men’s basketball program has added a new member to its coaching staff with the appointment of Christen Cunningham as the General Manager/Assistant Coach. Head coach Chris Mack made the announcement, introducing Cunningham as a crucial addition to the team.
A Well-Established Background
Christen Cunningham joins the Charleston program with a strong resume, having most recently worked as an assistant coach at Rhode Island. Prior to this role, he served as the director of player development for the 2022-23 season at Rhode Island. Cunningham’s experience also includes a stint as a graduate assistant at Louisville from 2020-22.
During his time at Louisville, Cunningham made a significant impact on the court as well. He captained the team in the 2018-19 season, averaging 10.1 points and 4.9 assists per game. His leadership helped guide the team to a successful season with 20 wins and an NCAA Championship appearance.
Player Development and Management
In his new role with the Charleston program, Cunningham will take on the responsibility of managing the team’s roster in the ever-evolving landscape of college basketball. With a focus on Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities, Cunningham will work closely with all relevant parties to ensure the program remains at the forefront of this new era.
Coach Mack expressed his enthusiasm for having Cunningham on board, highlighting his contributions both on and off the court. “CC” will play a pivotal role in shaping the team’s offensive identity and driving player development initiatives. Mack’s firsthand experience coaching Cunningham at Louisville gives him confidence in the positive impact Cunningham will have on the players and staff at Charleston.
A Diverse Background
Before transitioning into coaching, Cunningham continued his basketball journey overseas, playing professionally in the Croatian Premier League and Adriatic Basketball Association during the 2019-20 season. His experience at the international level adds a unique perspective to his coaching approach and player development strategies.
Cunningham holds a bachelor’s degree in public administration from Samford University, where he set the all-time assist record with 514 assists. His impressive collegiate career also includes a master’s degree in sport administration from Louisville, showcasing his commitment to both academic and athletic excellence.
