Locals in Charleston Rally against Weapon Sales to Israel

Charleston residents, joined by the Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL), rallied on Saturday against the local weapons company, Elbit Systems, due to the company’s arms sales to Israel. The protest, organized by PSL in cooperation with Free Palestine Charleston, aimed to make their opposition to the company’s weapons exports to Israel heard.

Why the Protest?

Elbit Systems, a prominent local company in Charleston that produces weapons and technology for military use, has come under scrutiny for its business ties with Israel. According to the protestors, these weapons are purportedly used in conflicts leading to civilian casualties. This gathering was organized to voice concerns over the company’s role in this controversial issue and to stand in solidarity with the affected regions.

The Protestors’ Perspective

Rose Hassouneh, a member of PSL, underscored the importance of protests like these and why locals felt strongly about making their voices heard. “We want to show that like here in South Carolina, our voices matter. We should have a say in what is going on and we want to stand with other workers such as the workers at Elbit, the workers at the Port, who believe these organizations are taking our taxes, time, and work and using it to commit occurrences they judge as genocide,” said Hassouneh.

Additionally, the demonstrators expressed that the protest was also a way to challenge the community’s alleged involvement in what they call genocide. Hassouneh continued, “We want to show here locally that we all have a voice in what’s happening. Whether it’s small or large, we deserve a say in what’s going on and we have a right to that.”

‘People’s Red Line Tour’

The protest was part of a larger series of actions by the PSL called the “People’s Red Line Tour.” Although the date and topic of the next protest are yet to be announced, they aim to continue with their demonstrations within the month, drawing attention to issues of concern in the region.

No Word from Elbit Systems

HERE News reached out to Elbit Systems for comment regarding the protest and its claims, but so far there has been no response.

This event reflects the increasing concerns of various groups over the impacts of weapon sales on conflicts abroad. The Charleston locals, along with PSL, are pushing for accountability and fairness in their community’s involvement in the global scene. Their actions cover the ongoing debate about the role companies like Elbit Systems play in international conflicts and the opinions of those who are indirectly involved.
