Already notable for its hot and humid summers, Charleston has recently been experiencing an alarmingly steady rise in temperatures. So far this year, 12 heat advisories and one excessive heat warning have been issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Records from the last five decades indicate that the average summertime temperature in Charleston has progressively increased. In 1970, the average summertime temperature was 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Currently, it stands at around 82 degrees. Simultaneously, the average overnight low has also risen, from 71 degrees in 1970 to slightly over 73 degrees in present times.
Moreover, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of risky heat days in Charleston, estimated at approximately 20 each year. Risky heat days are characterized by an average temperature exceeding 82.5 degrees in a day, inclusive of the overnight low temperature.
Charleston’s heat influx can be largely attributed to the effects of climate change, as explained by meteorologists. The increase in extreme weather, such as persistently high heat levels and ensuing harsh weather phases, are believed to be coerced by climate change, primarily due to carbon pollution.
This phenomenon is escalating the severity of our heatwaves and lengthening their duration. If the climatic conditions are to be controlled and the surge in temperatures is to see a decline, there is an urgent requirement for a significant reduction in carbon emissions.
As discussed by climate experts, implementing mitigation and adaptation measures are of paramount importance. These include regulating fossil fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions, along with initiating steps like extensive tree plantation to attenuate the urban heat effect. Conveniently, these measures not only curb the temperature rise but also enrich city life by substantially improving quality.
However, it’s not all doom and gloom. The relentless efforts towards reducing our carbon emissions have so far managed to prevent the absolute catastrophe of global warming. Having said that, the road ahead remains challenging and demands further rigorous efforts to substantially decelerate the heating trend.
While the current climate substantially differs from what it was five decades ago, it’s vital for residents to comprehend that our climate has undergone significant changes and continues to do so. Temperature and weather patterns are shifting and it’s paramount that citizens stay informed about these trends and take appropriate measures to ensure safety.
As humans, we find ourselves facing new and challenging climatic realities with each passing day. It is incumbent upon us to comprehend the crucial role of our planet’s climate in our lives and work collaboratively to safeguard the environment and our future in it.
