Charleston Witnesses an Increasing Trend in Temperatures
Already notable for its hot and humid summers, Charleston has recently been experiencing an alarmingly steady rise in temperatures. So far this year, 12 heat advisories and one excessive heat warning have been issued by the National Weather Service in Charleston.
Significant Shifts in Average Temperatures
Records from the last five decades indicate that the average summertime temperature in Charleston has progressively increased. In 1970, the average summertime temperature was 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Currently, it stands at around 82 degrees. Simultaneously, the average overnight low has also risen, from 71 degrees in 1970 to slightly over 73 degrees in present times.
Moreover, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of risky heat days in Charleston, estimated at approximately 20 each year. Risky heat days are characterized by an average temperature exceeding 82.5 degrees in a day, inclusive of the overnight low temperature.

Charleston’s heat influx can be largely attributed to the effects of climate change, as explained by meteorologists. The increase in extreme weather, such as persistently high heat levels and ensuing harsh weather phases, are believed to be coerced by climate change, primarily due to carbon pollution.
This phenomenon is escalating the severity of our heatwaves and lengthening their duration. If the climatic conditions are to be controlled and the surge in temperatures is to see a decline, there is an urgent requirement for a significant reduction in carbon emissions.

These include regulating fossil fuel consumption and lowering carbon emissions, along with initiating steps like extensive tree plantation to attenuate the urban heat effect.
