Charleston Celebrates Local Entrepreneurship at Inaugural American Express Shop And Stroll Holiday Market

Charleston Comes to Life with American Express’ Shop And Stroll Holiday Market

Charleston County, S.C. witnessed a vibrant celebration of local entrepreneurship this past Saturday as the American Express Shop And Stroll market transformed Market Street into a holiday wonderland. Shoppers, artisans, and foodies alike gathered to support small businesses and soak in a festive atmosphere just in time for the holiday shopping season.

A Celebration of Local Business

This marked the inaugural Shop And Stroll event, brought to life by American Express, who has been a champion for small businesses for over a decade. As the holiday season kicks off, the emphasis on shopping small resonates more than ever. American Express believes that choosing to shop locally is a way to invest in your community and ensure the neighborhoods we cherish remain vibrant spaces.

Jess Ling, the Executive Vice President of Global Advertising at American Express, shared some insights at the event. “We’re excited to be celebrating 15 years of Small Business Saturday. This is our first time in Charleston, a city where 99% of businesses are small,” she remarked. The initiative was conceived following the financial crisis of 2008, aiming to drive people into the doors of small businesses across America when they needed it the most.

Small Business Saturday – A Lifeline for Local Enterprises

According to a recent study from American Express, a staggering 84% of small business owners view Small Business Saturday as a vital day during the holiday season. This day is not just about shopping; it acts as a catalyst for launching and promoting the unique offerings that small businesses have to provide. One particularly heartwarming aspect of the Shop And Stroll is the organization’s commitment to giving back. For every purchase made by American Express card members on Small Business Saturday, the company donates $1 to hurricane relief efforts, focusing on assisting small businesses affected by hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Local Vendors Shine Bright

Among the local businesses taking part was Lilies of Charleston. Jamel Richardson, the lead for Operations and Marketing, shared that their unique barbeque sauce and signature “Gullah Pop” not only treat customers’ taste buds but also help support the International African American Museum and the Penn Center, reinforcing their commitment to community and culture.

Market Street was abuzz with a combination of small business booths, food trucks, live music, and even complimentary gift-wrapping stations. Shoppers like Alyssa and Erin expressed joy in supporting local artisans, noting that there were “just so many good things that are made in Charleston.” They explained how shopping small makes them feel connected to the authenticity and love behind each product.

Shop With Intention

Shopping small is encouraged to be done with purpose. Hart Hagerty, founder and designer at Hart Jewelry, emphasized the importance of shopping with intention. “We love creating personalized pieces with meaning, a beautiful antidote to mass consumption,” said Hagerty, inviting shoppers to reflect on the significance of their gifts.

A Festive Conclusion to the Day

As the sun set, the excitement continued with a special performance by Noah Kahan at the historic Riviera Theater, ensuring that those who came downtown for the Shop And Stroll left with not just unique gifts, but cherished memories of supporting their local community.

American Express hopes that this inaugural event not only highlighted the importance of small businesses but also left a lasting impression on shoppers about the joy of keeping their money within their own neighborhoods. So, as the holiday season continues, remember to think small and shop local!
