In a tragic event that has left the Charleston community reeling, two residents of the city have been pronounced dead following a late-night shooting. The victims were identified as Derrick Rollerson, Sr., 38, and 34-year-old Rashaad Simmons by the Charleston County Coroner’s office. The tragic incident took place on Tuesday night in downtown Charleston.
Following the sound of gunshots around 9:45 p.m., officers from the Charleston Police Department responded to the scene located on Johnson Street between America and Hanover Streets. Upon their arrival, they discovered Rollerson and Simmons, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Medical professionals quickly pronounced the two men dead, marking a stark conclusion to the tense scene.
While officers were at the crime scene collecting evidence and running preliminary investigations, they encountered an unexpected issue. A crowd of bystanders that had gathered near the site became unruly. The Police made an arrest for public disorderly conduct in an attempt to regain control of the situation. However, the arrest was noted to be unrelated to the shooting itself.
Authorities are currently pursuing leads and gathering evidence to shed more light on this brutal event. As of yet, they have not made any arrests in relation to the shooting. They are appealing to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information regarding the tragic incident to come forward.
The Charleston Police Department has opened several lines of communication for the public to assist in the investigation. Potential witnesses or those with relevant knowledge about the incident are invited to call the on-duty Charleston Police detective at 843-720-2422. They can also provide information via email at speaktocpd@charleston-sc.gov. Furthermore, anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at 843-554-1111.
This shocking incident has left the Charleston community in mourning and increased the urgency for efforts to curb violent incidents in the city.
