Charleston Orchestra Gears Up for Carnegie Hall with Special Sendoff Concert on December 2, 2024

Charleston Set to Soar with Orchestra’s Stunning Sendoff Concert!

Charleston is buzzing with excitement as the College of Charleston Orchestra prepares for an unforgettable experience. This February, they’ll be gracing the stage of Carnegie Hall, one of the most renowned venues in the world. But wait, Charleston locals don’t have to wait until then to catch a glimpse of these talented musicians! There’s a special sendoff concert happening right in the heart of our city on December 2, 2024.

A Taste of Carnegie Hall Right in Charleston

The concert promises not just a preview of what’s to come in New York, but also a celebration of local talent. Under the direction of conductor Yuriy Bekker, the orchestra will perform pieces that will be featured at Carnegie Hall, including selections from Dvořák’s New World Symphony. Fun fact: This piece actually premiered at Carnegie Hall way back in 1893! In addition to the classical masterpieces, the evening will also unveil a brand-new composition by College of Charleston’s own Professor Yiorgos Vassilandonakis.

“I am thrilled that we’ll perform works from our upcoming Carnegie Hall tour,” confided Bekker. “It’s always exciting when someone composes something specific for our group.” He continued, “As an orchestra, we get to take ownership as this piece has been written just for us. Professor Vassilandonakis has a personal connection to us, and the orchestra takes great pride in premiering this work.”

Spotlighting Local Talent

In what promises to be a stunning highlight of the night, Bekker expressed his enthusiasm about featuring the College’s award-winning faculty musicians. Violinist Lee-Chin Siow and cellist Natalia Khoma will take the spotlight as they perform selections from Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello. This work is often described as a “blockbuster,” showcasing the soloists with remarkable depth and flair. Think of it as a miniature symphony that weaves the soloists’ melodies into the rich tapestry of the orchestra.

“This is a rare chance for our local audiences to witness our extraordinary faculty and students in a concert setting,” Bekker shared. He encourages everyone to come out and support the orchestra before their big trip to New York City.

So, when is this exciting event again? Mark your calendars for Monday, December 2, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.. Preparing for a Rainy Evening

As you prepare to enjoy this cultural treat, it looks like the weather in Charleston is shaping up to be a bit on the cloudy side with a high of 74°F and light winds. It might even rain in the evening, so while you enjoy the concert, you might want to take an umbrella along!
