Charleston Celebrates Major Scholarship Expansion for Local Students
In an exciting development for education in Spartanburg County, a monumental $40 million donation from Susu and George Dean Johnson Jr. has set the stage for an expansion of South Carolina’s largest in-state college scholarship program. The Meeting Street Scholarship Fund, which has already been a game-changer since its inception in 2020, announced the news on Thursday, and it has everyone buzzing!
A Bright Future for 45,000 Students
With this generous funding, the scholarship program will now reach out to over 45,000 students in public schools throughout Spartanburg County. “Spartanburg is our home, and we are thrilled to support the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund’s expansion here,” the Johnsons shared in a heartfelt statement. They went on to emphasize the transformative power of education, stating, “This Scholarship will open doors for talented and deserving students across the county.”
Addressing the Cost of College
Originally launched by Ben and Kelly Navarro, the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund provides much-needed financial assistance to students. Each year, students can receive up to $10,000 to help bridge the gap between state-funded lottery scholarships and the real costs of attending college. A recent report highlighted a troubling trend: back in 2002, lottery scholarships covered an average of 105% of tuition and fees at in-state public colleges. Fast forward to today, and that number has dropped to a mere 29%.
John Huber-MacNealy, the program director, underscored the urgent need to address these challenges, stating, “The impact of the [lottery] scholarship just isn’t what it was when it was created.” But thanks to the contributions from the Johnsons and others like the Darla Moore Foundation, the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund is making strides by serving students in 13 counties across South Carolina.
Real Stories, Real Impact
Clemson University student, Aaron Gillam, shared his emotional experience upon learning about the scholarship. “They were telling us about what we were going to be receiving, and I just looked at my mom and she and I both started crying,” said Gillam. His story highlights the weight that financial stress can impose on families, saying, “So there was stress on my heart and stress on hers, and being able to relieve that for both of us was huge.”
Future Aspirations
The leaders of the Meeting Street Scholarship Fund have even bigger dreams that extend beyond Spartanburg. Their hope is to eventually provide scholarships for students in all 46 counties in South Carolina. Josh Bell, president of Beemok Education, expressed the goals of the fund: “We are not just sending students to college; we are helping them thrive.” Along the way, they’re fostering a community of students, families, and supporters focused on nurturing future leaders.
