Charleston, S.C. – SLED Investigating In-Custody Death at Al Cannon Detention Center

The Charleston County Coroner’s Office has released the name of the inmate who died while he was in custody at the Sheriff Al Cannon Detention Center.

Details of the Incident

Deputies were called to the Charleston County Detention Center on Leeds Avenue around 2 p.m. Sunday for reports of an inmate who was unresponsive, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lexi Douglas said. Detention deputies found an unconscious man who was not breathing. Deputies, medical staff, North Charleston Fire Department personnel and EMS attempted life-saving measures on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jordan Bell, 33, of North Charleston, died as a result of asphyxia, according to Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal. The manner of death was determined to be suicide.

Investigation Underway

Charleston County Sheriff Kristin Graziano has asked SLED to investigate. In addition to SLED’s investigation, the Office of Professional Standards at the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an internal review, which is standard.
