As the holiday season rushes into full swing, Charleston residents are being reminded to keep their cool behind the wheel. With more families hitting the roads for gatherings and shopping trips, the Charleston Police Department is seeing a worrying uptick in road rage incidents. Officers are encouraging everyone to prioritize safety and keep their patience intact while driving around town.
Over the past few weeks, the police have been summoned for several road rage situations that have left the community on edge. Just last Monday, authorities charged a 41-year-old man, Shawn Delacy, who allegedly pointed a firearm during a road rage incident on Savannah Highway earlier this month. To add to the distress, another local, a 44-year-old woman named Jennifer Brown, faces similar charges after an altercation in a restaurant parking lot along the same highway on December 14.
It doesn’t stop there. Just a few days before Brown’s incident, police received reports of someone brandishing a firearm at a victim on I-526, and this case is still under investigation. Even more concerning is a deadly shooting on Savannah Highway that detectives suspect was sparked by road rage back on October 3. If that wasn’t enough, shots were also fired into a vehicle during another road rage encounter near Pail Cantrell Blvd. on November 30, which is still being looked into.
The Charleston Police Department is making it clear that a moment of anger can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation, reminding everyone that “a moment of calm can prevent a lifetime of regret.” If you find yourself dealing with an aggressive driver or feel threatened in any way while on the road, it’s best to keep your distance and contact 911 instead of engaging. It’s all about looking out for each other as a community.
Members of the public who have witnessed any of these recent road rage incidents or have valuable information are encouraged to reach out. You can contact the police department by calling 843-720-2422 and asking for the on-duty central detectives. Alternatively, there’s also the option to submit tips online, ensuring that everyone can play a part in keeping Charleston’s roads safer for all.
Lastly, keep an eye out for those ugly Christmas sweaters and make sure to gift responsibly. There’s still time for quick shipping if you’re shopping online, and don’t forget, your delivery driver might appreciate a little thank you!
Let’s make this holiday season safe and cheerful for everyone. Happy travels from Charleston!
