Charleston Celebrates Photography and Embraces Winter’s Chill

Charleston, known for its rich history and stunning landscapes, has got something exciting brewing! Each week, the community comes together to celebrate the art of photography through a friendly competition that highlights the beauty of our surroundings. With winter now creeping in, this week’s photo contest has given us a delightful look at how the old and new intertwine in our city.

Weekly Shout-out to the Best Shots!

Holding the spotlight this week is Merv Gibson from Charleston, whose stunning capture of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge shines above the historic Silas N. Pearman and John P. Grace Memorial Bridges. While the Pearman and Grace bridges are now a part of the city’s past, Merv’s photograph reminds us of how time changes our landscape but always leaves behind a beautiful story.

Also, let’s not forget the fantastic submissions from other talented photographers! James L. Fritsch wowed us with a stunning image taken during an early morning walk in Oia, Greece. His photo captured a striking contrast of modern headless statues against the backdrop of ancient Greek culture, showcasing the beauty of old and new coexisting in harmony.

Meanwhile, Ronald Allan Charles from Goose Creek offered an intriguing glimpse into the past with a snapshot of an old Charleston newspaper from April 13, 1945, alongside this week’s edition. This photo perfectly encapsulates the weave of history that defines Charleston.

Next Week’s Topic!

And hold on tight, folks! Next week’s theme is “Man, it’s cold,” so find those wintery vibes! Snap and send in your best photo that captures the frosty chill in the air. Whether it’s a snowflake on a window or cozy mittens, we want to see how you celebrate the chilly season!

Remember: You can submit your photos to yourphotos@postandcourier.com by noon Thursday. Please include your name, town, and where the photo was taken. If you’re aiming for a spot in print, your photo needs to be at least 1,500 pixels, free of commercial watermarks, and not shared elsewhere.

Mark Your Calendars!

Every Friday, we share the editors’ pick of the week at our website along with the topic for the next week. Saturdays are reserved for an online gallery showcasing all the lovely submissions, and then, on Sundays, the selected photo of the week graces the Life section, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!

Don’t worry if your photo isn’t chosen for immediate publication; all submissions will be considered for inclusion in the Post and Courier’s yearly magazine highlighting the beauty of our beloved Charleston—that’s a win-win!

Join the Fun!

As we step into the heart of winter, this photo competition is just one more way we cherish our vibrant Charleston community. It’s all about sharing moments, fostering creativity, and of course, having a bit of fun along the way. So grab your camera, bundle up against the chill, and let’s get snapping! Who knows, your masterpiece might just be next week’s winner!

Cheers to winter snows and captures that tell our stories. Happy photographing!
