Charleston Commemorates Pearl Harbor Day on Its 83rd Anniversary

Charleston, South Carolina – This December 7th marks a significant day in America’s history – the 83rd anniversary of the devastating Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As the nation reflects on this tragic event, the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum is leading the way in remembrance with a special memorial service aboard the historic USS Yorktown. The gathering will take place at 11 a.m., and it’s completely free for all attendees!

Honoring Local Heroes

During this poignant ceremony, the Charleston community will come together to honor the twenty-five known South Carolinians who lost their lives on that fateful December day in 1941. As we remember those brave souls, it’s a reminder of the sacrifices made by many during a time of great uncertainty. As part of the event, guests will have the opportunity to reflect on the impact of the attack, which saw over 2,400 casualties in total, including 2,335 U.S. service members and 68 civilians.

This year’s service promises to be especially thoughtful, featuring a wreath-laying ceremony, the tolling of a bell, and a traditional gun salute. Allison Hunt, the Executive Director of Patriots Point, expressed her pride in hosting this remembrance, stating, “Patriots Point is honored to serve as a place for the community to come together and pay tribute to those who lost their lives during the Pearl Harbor attack 83 years ago.”

A Day to Remember

The attack itself was a major turning point in World War II, with more than 350 aircraft involved in the extensive 75-minute assault. The devastation was immense, resulting in the destruction or damage of over 300 U.S. aircraft and 19 Navy ships. For those who may not have the details fresh in mind, the sheer scale of loss on that day can sometimes be overwhelming, yet it’s important to remember the personal stories behind the statistics.

The event is set to bring together veterans, families, friends, and community members to reflect and remember. The USS Yorktown, a revered aircraft carrier, serves as the perfect backdrop for such a significant occasion. Attendees can expect an atmosphere filled with respect, admiration, and a sense of unity as they remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Community Involvement

Notably, all participants will enjoy complimentary museum admission and parking, making it even easier for families to attend. This is a wonderful opportunity to not only pay respects but also to learn more about our naval history at the museum.

Retired Air Force Major General Charles C. Baldwin will be offering remarks during the service, making it a moment filled with reflection and respect. His presence at the ceremony symbolizes the importance of remembering our heroes, both past and present.

If you’re in the Charleston area, consider joining this community gathering to honor the lives lost and to appreciate the courageous spirit that defines our nation. Let’s come together as a community to mark this remembrance in a way that truly befits the bravery displayed many years ago.
