CHARLESTON – The vibrant music scene in Charleston is glowing brighter than ever! This past Labor Day weekend was truly a spectacular time for music lovers across the Lowcountry, with three fantastic festivals lighting up the area from the sandy shores of Isle of Palms to the heart of downtown Charleston and even reaching Edisto Island.
Over the long weekend, the **Lowcountry Jazz Festival** took place at the Charleston Gaillard Center from August 30 to September 1, providing a rich blend of internationally acclaimed jazz musicians and local talents. The atmosphere was electric as people swayed to the smooth sounds that filled the air.
At the same time, Edisto Beach hosted its lively **2024 Shag Festival**, which saw a delightful surge in attendance this year. With around 2,200 attendees, the festival grew by over 200 people compared to last year! Guests of all ages took to the dance floor, showcasing their best Carolina Shag moves and sharing in the joyful spirit of the season.
Meanwhile, Isle of Palms welcomed the **inaugural Wonderjam Music Fest** on September 2. This brand-new festival was created to showcase local Charleston bands and DJs, giving local artists a platform to shine. It was a fantastic opportunity for attendees to discover fresh talent in an upbeat and fun-filled environment.
One of the standout contributors to the weekend’s festivities was Alyce Rogers, the lead singer of the popular local duo **Me and Mr. Jones**. Rogers not only organized the Wonderjam Music Fest under her company **Show Pony Events**, but she also took the stage with her band, captivating audiences with her powerful vocals and infectious energy. Rogers has been a part of the Charleston music scene since 2015 and has always believed in the importance of community and collaboration.
“Everyone talks about doing something, and you don’t see it happen for another 10 years,” Rogers shared in an interview. She saw an opportunity to bring together talented artists who often performed on the same local stages but had never shared one before. Her vision? A festival where locals could experience Charleston’s best artists all in one place!
This impactful weekend doesn’t mark the end! As the leaves begin to change, music lovers will have more to look forward to, starting with the **4th Annual Drifter Fest** happening on September 13-14, followed closely by **Darius Rucker’s Riverfront Revival** on October 12. Adding to the excitement, the magazine **Field & Stream**, owned by country music stars **Morgan Wallen** and **Eric Church**, will have its debut music festival in Winnsboro during the weekend of October 4-6.
The Charleston music scene is more than just entertainment; it’s a thriving community with artists and fans coming together in harmony. The recent festivals illustrate how much love and support exists for local musicians, and as Alyce Rogers put it: “There are so many different elements that can cause a divide sometimes in a community, and Charleston certainly shares and connects on their love and support for music.”
As summer draws to a close, it’s clear that Charleston’s music scene is only getting stronger. If this past Labor Day weekend was any indication, we can expect even more exciting events that showcase the talent, passion, and creativity of local artists. Stay tuned, because there’s a lot of beautiful music headed our way!
