Charleston’s Musical Scene Welcomes a New Solo Artist
Charleston, SC, is alive with the sound of music! With a rich history of local talents, the city is buzzing with excitement as Joel Timmons, a name that many longtime residents will recognize, prepares to unveil his solo debut. Timmons, known for his role in the feel-good rock band, Sol Driven Train, and as one half of the duo Sally & George alongside his wife, Shelby Means, is ready to take a significant step in his musical journey.
From Band Leader to Solo Artist
For decades, Timmons has been a prominent figure in the Charleston music scene, contributing to various projects and garnering attention for his artistic talents. Although he has conducted numerous studio recording sessions over the years—more than most can count—his upcoming album, Psychedelic Surf Country, will mark his official solo entry into the music world. Set to release in February 2025, fans are eagerly anticipating what Timmons has in store.
The First Single: “The Bullfighter”
Before the album drops, we have a treat in store! The first single from the album, titled “The Bullfighter,” will be released on November 1. To add an exciting twist, Timmons teams up with his friend and fellow artist, Cary Ann Hearst from the famous duo Shovels & Rope, who shares lead vocals. This single comes from the repertoire of the late Luke Bell, a country troubadour whose poignant storytelling still resonates deeply with fans even after his untimely passing in 2022.
“I met Bell in the music scene in Nashville, and he stood out as a genuine cowboy in a sea of imposters,” recalls Timmons. He vividly remembers hearing Bell perform “The Bullfighter” at Dee’s Country Cocktail Lounge, where the rawness of his voice captured Timmons instantly. It’s a heartfelt homage to Bell’s artistry, bringing the essence of country music to life once again.

Upcoming Performance and Community Spirit
But that’s not all! Timmons and Hearst will perform live on November 9 at Revel on the River at The Refinery. This special event is a benefit for Charleston Waterkeeper, showcasing not just their musical talents but also their commitment to community wellbeing. Alongside them will be the Marshgrass Mamas, making it a night of excellent music while supporting a meaningful cause.
A Flourishing Music Scene
Charleston isn’t just buzzing for Timmons. The vibrant music scene continues to thrive with various artists making waves. For instance, local singer-songwriter Lureto recently released an EP titled A Peak from the Crow’s Nest from his home studio and record label, Red Lion. Also, keep an eye out for Rucker‘s album, named after his late mother, showcasing how intertwined personal stories and music can be.
From the soulful sounds of The Windjammer on April 14 to a six-piece soul band releasing their single on May 27, it’s clear that Charleston’s music scene is alive, well, and constantly evolving.
Charleston is a melting pot of talent, and with artists like Joel Timmons highlighting their journey, the city continues to be a beacon of creativity. So mark your calendars for those important dates and prepare for a fantastic musical journey! This is the Charleston spirit!
