Charleston's Museum Mile Month Returns with Discounted Access to Cultural Attractions

Charleston Welcomes Back Museum Mile Month with Exciting Offers!

As the charming city of Charleston gears up for the much-anticipated annual Museum Mile Month, locals and visitors alike are in for a treat this January! With a blend of history, art, and culture, January is looking brighter as museums along the historic stretch of Meeting Street get ready to showcase their rich offerings at discounted prices.

A Journey Through Time Awaits

Kicking off the fun, the Pass offers access to over a dozen attractions for those who love to explore the past and embrace the stories that shaped this beautiful city. For just $35 for adults and $10 for children under 12, you can hop from one fascinating museum to another. Yes, you heard that right! It’s a steal!

The Charleston Museum, which enthusiastically started this collaborative promotion way back in 2007, has seen the program evolve. The very first pass cost only $20 and was limited to a single weekend. Fast forward to today, and it has become an annual highlight that encourages both locals and tourists to dive deeper into Charleston’s vibrant history.

Locals Are Leading the Charge

What’s notably interesting is how the promotion brings in a significant number of local attendees rather than out-of-town visitors. Carl Borick, the director of the Charleston Museum, pointed out that while the goal was to attract tourists, it has turned into a local favorite. “I always love the phrase ‘being a tourist in your hometown,’ and this is an opportunity for people to embrace that,” he said.

Let’s get to the numbers! In 2019, more than 1,800 tickets were sold, which shows a promising trend. With the pandemic now fading, ticket sales are projected to exceed what was achieved pre-pandemic. Last year, each house museum reported over 800 visitors, proving that locals are eager to rediscover their own backyard.

Exploring the Stories Behind the Walls

One of the participating museums, the Powder Magazine Museum on Cumberland Street, is particularly excited about Museum Mile Month. Director Katherine Pemberton explained how the pass helps to connect Atlanta’s buildings to its storied past. “During the Siege of Charleston in 1780, the gunpowder was cleverly hidden in the Old Exchange Building. It’s stories like this that show how history is intertwined,” she said passionately.

Something for Everyone

Families and friends are sure to find something fun to explore. The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is participating again this year, with new exhibits that promise to spark creativity and imagination in kids of all ages. Meanwhile, the S.C. Historical Society Museum houses a staggering collection of over 2 million documents that tells tales of Charleston’s rich history.

Tickets are currently available until December 31 at charlestonsmuseummile.org. After that date, they will only be offered at select visitor centers located in downtown Charleston, Mount Pleasant, North Charleston, and Kiawah Island. Talk about a fantastic way to spend time with family or friends while learning about Charleston’s history!

Mark Your Calendar!

So, are you ready to grab your pass and mark those calendars? January is just around the corner, and with foggy mornings turning into mostly cloudy afternoons, it’s the perfect time to step out and enjoy some local culture. You may just discover something new about the city you thought you knew so well!

Here’s to a wonderful Museum Mile Month — let’s become tourists in our hometown and uncover the hidden gems right under our noses!
