Charleston Museum Unveils New Exhibit: “Beyond the Ashes”

Charleston has welcomed a brand new permanent exhibition at the Charleston Museum, titled “Beyond the Ashes: The Lowcountry’s New Beginnings.” Officially unveiled on October 25, this captivating display takes visitors on a journey through significant events that have shaped the city from the end of the Civil War all the way to the present day.

Connecting the Past to the Present

The museum’s director, Carl Borick, shared with enthusiasm that the goal has always been to create an exhibition focusing on the approximately 160 years that followed the Civil War. This was no small task! Curators spent a considerable amount of time sifting through artifacts to tell a comprehensive story. With the guidance of Dr. Millicent Brown, a renowned civil rights pioneer who was among the first students to be integrated into Charleston public schools in 1963, they were able to craft a powerful narrative.

“You can’t possibly cover every single piece of our history,” Borick explained. “That’s just impossible. But we focused on collecting significant items that highlight our unique story.” This collaboration not only helped in introducing new artifacts but also provided a fresh perspective on key facets of civil rights and the rich history of Charleston and the greater Lowcountry.

A Treasure Trove of Local Significance

What can visitors expect to see in “Beyond the Ashes?” The exhibit is filled with an impressive selection of items that shine a light on crucial episodes in the region’s past. From the era of Reconstruction, the devastating earthquake of 1886, and the flourishing Charleston Renaissance to the impacts of the two World Wars, the vibrancy of the Jim Crow era, the passionate civil rights movement, and the destruction of Hurricane Hugo, each artifact contributes uniquely to the overarching narrative.

A Historical Journey Like No Other

One thing to keep in mind when visiting the museum is its unique position as the only place where you can find a comprehensive A-to-Z history of the Charleston area. Borick emphasizes that it tells stories that range from local native peoples to modern-day happenings. “It encompasses cultural history, going back 400-500 million years to the geological history of the current epoch,” he remarked. “Now, with this exhibit, we present a complete story.”
