In honoring a longtime television personality, Mayor William Cogswell of Charleston has declared August 20 as ‘Al Roker Day.’ The announcement comes in celebration of Roker’s 70th birthday and his dedicated service to the nation.
In a heartfelt proclamation, Mayor Cogswell paid homage to Roker’s contributions. “I, William S. Cogswell, Mayor of the City of Charleston, do hereby proclaim August 20, 2024, to be Al Roker Day,” he read during a live event at Charleston’s iconic pineapple fountain.
Roker’s passionate indulgence in the Lowcountry and his fondness for the city have left a significant impact on Charleston. Mayor Cogswell observed during his remarks, “We appreciate his love for who and what we are, and so we felt that it was fitting on his 70th birthday to give him a proclamation honoring his 70th.”
Roker, who frequently visits Charleston, was born on August 20, 1954, in Queens, New York. He embarked on his television career in 1974 in Syracuse, New York, before eventually replacing Williard Scott on the Today Show in January 1996. Over the years, Roker has become an essential part of the renowned NBC morning show and a recurring highlight of the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Roker’s connection to the Lowcountry is deep and personal. He has made numerous visits to the city over the years, including a memorable one in 2022 when he joined the Today Show crew for a summer kickoff event. His frequent appearances at the city’s Wine and Food Festival also highlight his special relationship with Charleston.
Roker, with the assistance of Charleston’s Storm Team 2, set a Guinness World Record in June 2021 by hosting the longest online weather reporting relay on the summer’s first day. He is also scheduled to return to Charleston for the inaugural Food and Wine Classic event in late September 2024.
The City of Charleston proudly celebrates August 20 as ‘Al Roker Day,’ an acknowledgment of the venerated television personality’s 70th birthday and their enduring relationship with Al Roker. It is a day not just to honor Roker but also a tribute to his love for Charleston and its inhabitants.
