Playing a key role in grooming the next generation of maritime professionals, several maritime organizations in Charleston, South Carolina are all set to host the inaugural youth workforce expo on April 25, 2024. This groundbreaking event is a joint effort by The Maritime Association of South Carolina, SC Ports, SC Competes – the state’s logistics initiative, the Charleston County School District, and The Maritime Cybersecurity Institute.
The Expo Structure and Mission
The event is designed to provide students from 8th-12th grades insights into the myriad career opportunities available in the maritime and logistics sectors. The expo site, located at 196 Concord St., Charleston, will be transformed into a hub of learning and discovery, featuring over 30 participating companies spread across interactive booths. The companies will range from trucking companies to simulation centers and trailer providers, each offering hands-on activities to engage the students.
Taylor Jackson, the president and CEO of The Maritime Association of South Carolina, underlined the expo’s goals, saying, “Our mission is to educate students about maritime and logistics careers, emphasizing that irrespective of their education level, there is a chance for a rewarding career right here in Charleston. We’re hopeful that this expo will pave the way for a new generation of talent in South Carolina’s workforce and create a pipeline for these high wage, high demand jobs.”
Local Impact and Economic Significance
The maritime industry plays a significant part in the economy of Charleston, and the state as a whole. Barbara Melvin, President, and CEO of SC Ports mirrored the sentiment, stating, “The maritime industry in Charleston is vital to our state’s economy and provides countless job opportunities. Exposing students to careers in their own backyard can open doors they never knew existed, and it helps to ensure that the maritime industry continues to recruit new generations of talent.”
Schools and educational institutions in the region are supportive of the initiative. They believe it represents an invaluable opportunity for their students to explore lucrative career paths and understand the local economic landscape better.
