The violent altercation on December 13, 2021, resulted in the death of Erron Javier-Javon Johnson and has left a profound impact on the local community. After a lengthy trial, the jury found Green guilty of murder and weapon possession, delivering a verdict that resonated across Charleston.
Charleston, S.C. has recently seen a tragic outcome related to a shooting that took place in a local billiards hall. Quantas Green, a man with a complicated past, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. This news comes on the heels of a tense trial that captivated the attention of the city.
Last week, Judge Thomas William McGee, III delivered the sentence, closing the chapter on an incident that had shocked the community. The incident happened on December 13, 2021, at the popular Player’s Place Billiards in West Ashley, just before the clock struck midnight. Green, along with his cousin, arrived at the bar armed with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, ready for a night of gaming and socializing.
It seemed like any normal night. Green engaged in a game of pool with the victim, Erron Javier-Javon Johnson, and everything was seemingly fine until the atmosphere shifted dramatically. Eyewitness reports suggest that shortly after playing, Green threw his pool cue down on the table and expressed his desire to quit the game. What happened next escalated quickly, as Green aggressively approached Johnson, who countered by pushing him away.
The situation spiraled out of control in mere moments. A witness provided testimony that Green yelled profanities just before he fired a gunshot that struck Johnson in the neck, landing him in critical condition. Knowing that the bar was crowded, Green then discharged at least eight more rounds into the establishment, causing panic among customers and staff alike. The chaos unfolded in a matter of seconds, leaving many in disbelief.
Following the reckless gunfire, Green didn’t stick around long enough to face the consequences of his actions. He fled the scene, but not for long. Law enforcement was quick to respond, and less than an hour later, officers found him in a nearby saltmarsh, still wearing the same distinctive clothing that was captured on surveillance cameras. His attempt to evade capture proved futile, as he was arrested without further incident.
During the trial, there was a prevailing claim from Green’s defense team that he acted in self-defense during the altercation. However, the evidence presented, including the surveillance footage and witness testimonies, created a narrative that the jury found compelling. They deliberated for nearly 15 hours over the course of two days before arriving at their verdict.
The shooting has left a profound impact on the community, and no one knows this better than Johnson’s mother. While grappling with the grief of losing her son, she highlighted his passion for pool, love for family, and commitment to the local community. The pain of loss resonates deeply, and the aftermath of this crime will continue to affect East Ashley for a long time.
The Charleston Police Department, along with the Charleston County Sheriff’s Department, spearheaded the investigation with Detective Michael Galka taking the lead. The prosecution team, including Assistant Solicitors Andrew McAllister and Tiffany Izer, worked diligently to present a strong case against Green. On the other side, Green was represented by attorney Grant B. Smaldone.
As Charleston moves forward from this sad chapter in its history, the ruling serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violence. With a hefty prison sentence handed down, there is hope that this will deter future acts of aggression in similar settings.
