A tragic accident unfolded in Maine when a Charleston-based pilot, identified as 71-year-old Michael Leibowitz, was found dead at the site of a plane crash in Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport, Trenton. Also killed in the crash was 57-year-old Christina Chung of Livingston, NJ.
Reports of a plane crash came in around 12:25 p.m. on July 25, immediately prompting a response from Maine State Police. The aircraft involved in the accident was a single-engine Cirrus SR22 which, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), crashed on approach to the airport.
The FAA confirmed that the ill-fated plane had originally taken off from Morristown Municipal Airport, located in New Jersey. Subsequent investigations identified Leibowitz as the pilot before the plane met with its fatal end. It is currently unclear what led to the abrupt crash, though investigations are underway.
As of now, the lead investigators into the crash are the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Any further updates regarding the causal events that led to the fatal accident will be provided by the NTSB. Both Leibowitz and Chung were the only individuals aboard the plane at the time of the crash.
Leibowitz was a familiar figure in Charleston, being the founder of Call Experts, a family-owned and operated call center based in West Ashley. The company offers a variety of services encompassing telecommunications and office support to various professionals and companies.
Leibowitz’s tragic death has been met with deep sorrow in Charleston, where he had remained an active participant in the local business scene. Meanwhile, the companions and families of both victims, Leibowitz and Chung, wait for further updates from the NTSB and FAA regarding the crash.
