Charleston, S.C. – A tense situation unfolded inside the food court of a Charleston shopping mall on Friday. An Adam’s Run man was taken into custody by the Charleston Police Department, linked to a shooting that left one teenager injured.
Officials identified the suspect as 19-year-old Nathan Mungin. He now faces multiple charges, including possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and three counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.
Police officers were alerted to a disturbance at the Citadel Mall around 4 p.m on Friday. According to Sgt. Chris Stinson, the involved disturbance escalated into a sizeable fight among several individuals within the food court area, resulting in a single gunshot fired.
A teenager caught in the crossfire was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, fortunately none life-threating. Meanwhile, several people fled the scene as law enforcement arrived.
Cops swiftly identified Mungin as the primary suspect and apprehended him. From their initial investigations, they discovered that the shooting was a culmination of an ongoing dispute involving several people.
Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker expressed his gratitude towards both his officers’ rapid response and the fact that no one was seriously harmed during the incident. He stated, “While I’m grateful for our officers’ quick response to this situation, we need to acknowledge the horrifying reality created by such needless actions. Gun violence can never be a solution to any disagreement; it’s unacceptable and will forever remain so.”
As investigations continue, any persons with information useful to the case were encouraged to contact the Charleston Police Department.
Following the day’s horrifying incident, the mall administration decided to close for the day, promising a return to standard operational hours on the following Saturday. Nathan Mungin is currently held at the Al Cannon Detention Center, and a booking photo is not immediately available.
The Charleston incident underpins an urgent need for vigilance in public spaces to prevent such occurrences. The consequences could be much worse, given the potential for severe injuries or loss of life. The Charleston Police Department’s efforts should serve as a reminder of the crucial role law enforcement plays in maintaining public safety, and the need for the public’s assistance in reporting crime.
