Charlotte native AJ Smith has officially signed with the College of Charleston men’s basketball team, head coach Chris Mack confirmed on Friday. Smith, who previously played for crosstown rival The Citadel, is set to bring his talents to the Cougar roster.
The skilled guard started in 29 games for The Citadel and boasted an impressive average of 16.2 points per game, along with 4.3 rebounds per game. Smith’s standout performance on the court caught the attention of the Charleston coaching staff, who are thrilled to welcome him to the team.
With two years of eligibility remaining, AJ Smith is poised to make a significant impact on the Cougar squad. His experience and scoring ability are expected to enhance the team’s performance in the upcoming seasons.
Head coach Chris Mack expressed his excitement about adding AJ Smith to the College of Charleston basketball family. Mack praised Smith’s skills on the court, highlighting his versatility in guarding multiple positions, his ability to finish plays on the break, and his knack for creating mismatches.
Mack stated, “AJ is an absolute warrior on the basketball court and brings a winning mentality to everything he does. He’s a powerfully built wing that excels in guarding multiple positions, finishing on the break, and presenting mismatch opportunities.”
During The Citadel’s visit to TD Arena last season, Smith showcased his scoring prowess by dropping 18 points while shooting an impressive 6-9 from the field. His consistency in putting up double-digit points in nearly every game during his sophomore season solidified his reputation as a scoring threat.
In fact, Smith ranked sixth in the Southern Conference in points per game, further underscoring his offensive capabilities on the court.
Aside from his basketball skills, AJ Smith is also recognized for his leadership off the court. Coach Mack lauded Smith as a tremendous person who is poised to be a leader both on and off the floor for the Cougars. Smith’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game are expected to inspire his teammates and drive the team towards success.
“AJ has worked hard at improving his shooting over the past year, and it was reflective in his three-point percentage as a sophomore. Basketball skills aside, AJ is a tremendous person and will be a leader on and off the floor,” Mack affirmed.
With AJ Smith’s signing, the College of Charleston basketball team is gearing up for an exciting season ahead. Smith’s addition to the roster is anticipated to bolster the team’s performance and elevate their competitive edge in the conference.
