Good news, Charleston! Our local community is about to get even busier. A NEW warehouse is on the way, and it’s going to play a big part in getting those Target goodies into our hands. Yusen Logistics Inc., a well-known logistics company from New Jersey, is opening a spanking new 89,000-square-foot distribution center off of Clements Ferry Road. This exciting development is set to replace a temporary facility that has been operating at the Port of Charleston for more than two years.
Yusen Logistics is not just your average logistics company; they are a key player in handling imported goods for Target retail stores across the country. The brand new distribution center, located at 2000 Charleston Regional Parkway, close to Daniel Island, is scheduled to be up and running by late November. How neat is that?
This new site will boast an impressive 130 dock doors and ample parking for 645 truck trailers. If you thought their previous location at the Leatherman Terminal was enough, think again! This new facility has the potential to handle more than double the volume, setting the stage for a busy future.
So, why the urgency to relocate? Well, Greg Futato, senior vice president at Yusen’s contract logistics group, pointed out that they have truly outgrown their existing transload center. Can you believe they transloaded around 8,000 cargo containers annually? With this growth, the new distribution center will allow them to meet the increasing demand from Target and to welcome new customers in the vibrant Charleston market.
Additionally, Barbara Melvin, the president and CEO of the South Carolina State Ports Authority, highlighted that this warehouse will support retail shippers and importers in our rapidly growing Southeastern region. It’s great to see investments being made that increase our competitiveness in the port market!
Speaking of the port, did you know that Charleston’s port is seeing a rise in imported goods? Just in September, the state’s terminals moved the equivalent of 111,317 20-foot-long containers, marking nearly a 14.4 percent year-over-year increase. That’s significant growth as imports increased by 5.7 percent for the first three months of this fiscal year, which began in July.
In light of some recent challenges in the industry, such as the dockworkers’ strike that occurred earlier this month, the spike in imports may have been a strategic move by retailers trying to stock up. Ben Hackett, a maritime consultant, noted that this surge has stemmed from wholesalers and retailers preparing for potential disruptions, rather than a sudden upturn in demand.
Now, let’s take a moment to appreciate the ongoing relationship between Yusen Logistics and Target. Since 1997, Yusen has been a vital component in distributing Target’s goods and in 2023, they were even named the retailer’s third-party logistics provider of the year. Quite an honor!
Target has praised the temporary Charleston facility for adeptly managing fluctuations in shipping schedules and volumes. In a recent statement, they noted the team’s proactive communication and operational planning helped keep things running smoothly, which is no small feat.
With the new warehouse, Futato mentioned that they aim to optimize distribution, materials handling, order processing, and overall shipment management. This shift promises faster fulfillment and better service for everyone involved.
It seems Charleston’s port area is becoming increasingly attractive for major retailers. Walmart opened a massive 3 million-square-foot import distribution center not long ago, and Amazon has also got their hands in the pot with a 158,340-square-foot warehouse nearby. Other import giants such as Dollar General and Harbor Freight Tools also benefit from the authority’s inland ports.
So, buckle up, Charleston! With all these developments, we’re looking at even more jobs and a vibrant economy. Who knew logistics could bring so much good to our city?
