Charleston Jazz Gala Set to Honor Local Music Legend George Kenny
Charleston is buzzing with excitement as the annual Charleston Jazz Gala gears up to celebrate one of its own. On October 18, 2024, at the iconic American Theater, local music legend George Kenny will be the proud recipient of the prestigious 2024 Tip of the Hat Award. This special honor is named after the beloved Charleston Jazz Co-Founder Jack McCray and his famed collection of hats, which are well-known in the jazz community.
A Journey Through Music
George Kenny, a vibrant figure in the Charleston music scene for over five decades, has made remarkable contributions that resonate with the community. His musical journey took flight during his high school years at Burke High School where he started as a trumpet player. But it was his time serving in the United States Air Force in Korea that sharpened his musical prowess as he transitioned to saxophone.
After honoring his commitment to the military, Kenny continued his education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from South Carolina State College (now known as South Carolina State University).
A Commitment to Education
For thirty-two years, Kenny dedicated himself to shaping the lives of young musicians across Charleston County schools. He taught at various institutions, including Laing High School, C.A. Brown High School, Burke High School, Courtney Middle School, and the historic Jenkins Orphanage. His work at C.A. Brown High School was particularly memorable; he directed a musical production of Hello Dolly in 1970 that sold out all three performances at the Gaillard Auditorium, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.
A Legacy in Performance
Aside from his educational achievements, Kenny’s wealth of experience as a performer is equally impressive. He played the bass violin for the Ebony Fashion Fair and has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Lou Rawls, Teddy Pendergrass, and Dizzy Gillespie. His musical talents have also graced various festivals, including the Piccolo Spoleto Festival and the MOJA Arts Festival. Kenny has entertained audiences at major hotels and island resorts alongside the Davis Archer Band.
As a versatile musician, Kenny conducted the Melody Chimes Ensemble at Calvary Episcopal Church and even showcased his talents in films like The Notebook and Consenting Adults. His contributions to jazz were highlighted in Jack McCray’s book, Charleston Jazz, and he was featured on the Legends Band’s inaugural CD recording in 2010.
