Charleston Gears Up for Hurricane Relief Concert at the Gaillard Center

As the sun shines brightly over Charleston with a pleasant high of around 80 degrees, the city’s warm spirit is about to shine even brighter as music lovers unite for a noble cause. Mark your calendars for November 3, because the Carolinas Together Hurricane Relief Concert is set to take place at the famous Gaillard Center.

Why This Concert Matters

This concert, featuring an eclectic mix of local artists, is not just about the music—it’s about coming together as a community to help our neighbors in Western North Carolina who have faced devastating losses due to Hurricane Helene. Many talented artists have seen their income vanish as gigs were cancelled left and right as the storm wreaked havoc.

One of the driving forces behind this concert is Charlton Singleton, a beloved local musician and artist in residence emeritus at the Gaillard. Singleton knows all too well how tough it can be for artists who rely on performances for their livelihood. “If you’re an artist without a regular job, losing gigs can hit you hard,” he explains. “These artists are finding themselves in a tough spot right now.”

A Dream Lineup of Talent

And what a lineup it is! Headlining the concert is the folk duo Shovels & Rope, known for their heartwarming songs and engaging performances. Joining them on stage will be the vibrant sounds of Ranky Tanky, blending elements of jazz and Gullah music. Also gracing the stage are local favorites like Elise Testone, Quiana Parler, and Charlton Singleton himself with friends. The evening will also feature the poetic talents of both current and former poet laureates of Charleston, Asiah Mae and Marcus Amaker.

All Proceeds Going to a Worthy Cause

The Gaillard Center is all-in on this effort, with every dollar from the $50 tickets going directly to the North Carolina Arts Disaster Relief Fund. This fund aims to provide both immediate and long-term support to artists in need, helping them get back on their feet and rebuild their creative communities.

Lissa Frenkel, President and CEO of the Gaillard Center, is excited about the concert and its potential impact. “We really wanted to harness the power of our local arts community and do something meaningful,” she shares. “The support from everyone has been amazing—we’re really hoping to fill the place!”

Community Spirit in Action

The response from local creatives has been heartwarming, with many artists stepping up to lend their voices to this urgent cause. Singleton noted how quickly the concert came together, citing the positive energy and generosity of spirit prevalent among Charleston musicians. “We have so many talented folks who truly care and understand the importance of acting quickly in times of need,” he says.

And it’s not just musicians coming together; local organizations like the Charleston Music Hall and the Redux Contemporary Arts Center are rallying behind this initiative. They’ve created a collective effort known as Lowcountry Arts for WNC, ensuring that the entire arts community plays a part in this important relief effort.

A Reminder of the Power of Music

In times of hardship, music has this beautiful way of lifting spirits, and Singleton emphasizes how vital that can be. “Artists can use their talents to bring people together, to lift up those who are feeling down. It’s a reminder that music is healing,” he adds.
