Charleston’s Heartwarming Holiday Spirit Shines Through Angel Tree Parade
In the charming city of Charleston, the holiday spirit is alive and well, thanks to a wonderful community effort that brings smiles to children in need. Each year, the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) joins forces with the Salvation Army to deliver joy through the Angel Tree Parade, a delightful event that has become a local favorite since it first started in 2003.
A Colorful Procession to Remember
Last December, the festivities kicked off with a heartwarming sight: a joyful six-year-old leading a parade filled with musical marchers, costumed characters, and, of course, the iconic Santa Claus. As the parade made its way through the MUSC campus, excitement buzzed in the air. Everyone, from the Charleston Pipe and Drum Corps to characters like Cool Ray, the mascot of the Stingrays, joined in the merriment, all while carrying a bountiful collection of gifts.
“The event is really a sight to see,” Melissa Kubu, the head elf of the MUSC Angel Tree Parade, gushed. “Our grand marshal, usually a pediatric patient, is up there just glowing, while community members, patients, and MUSC care teams cheer from the sidelines.” And glow they did! The route of the parade winds through important landmarks including MUSC hospitals, the Ronald McDonald House, and the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. It was a heartwarming spectacle that brought joy to many, especially those who were feeling a bit “under the weather” this holiday season.
Fulfilling Holiday Wishes
The Angel Tree initiative is all about making holiday dreams come true for children aged newborn to 18. Each year, families present their stories of struggle — whether they’re dealing with low income, job loss, or special needs. Kubu, who is also the board vice president for the Salvation Army of Charleston, knows how impactful this community effort is. “These families have multiple stories…but they all need assistance,” she reflects.
The program kicks off in early November with a festive tree lighting in front of the children’s hospital. As the holiday season progresses, trees at various MUSC locations are adorned with angel-shaped tags detailing the needs and wishes of children who qualify for assistance. Community members, students, and employees come together to shop for new toys, clothes, and even bicycles, ensuring that every child’s wish gets the attention it deserves.
A Season of Generosity
As the days drew closer to the parade, the donations began to flood in, filling MUSC hospital lobbies with a stunning assortment of surprises. It’s a true testament to the community’s spirit: “Those giving these toys aren’t seeing who they’re going to,” Kubu noted. “It’s about knowing this is for the greater good. We’re providing hope for the people who need it most during the holidays.”
Transforming the Landscape
When the parade wrapped up, it left behind a transformed scene: a beautiful collection of new toys and bikes piled high, all set to be loaded onto Salvation Army trucks. The gifts would then be delivered to the North Charleston Convention Center, where volunteers would sort and prepare them for distribution. Families would have the chance to wrap these gifts, providing them an opportunity to experience the joy of gift-giving.
Kubu recalls the emotional moment a mother expressed her gratitude. “You never know what somebody else is going through, and this brings purpose back to so many,” she said. The holiday cheer isn’t just about the gifts; it’s about giving hope and creating connections during a time that can be challenging for many.

Mark your calendars! The Angel Tree Parade will take place on Tuesday, December 10, at noon, on the MUSC campus.
