Charleston is buzzing with some thrilling news that’s sure to benefit students, employees, and patients alike! The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) has kicked off a new chapter in medical education and healthcare services that promises to bring a wave of improvements over the coming years.

Fresh Beginnings for MUSC

On December 13, 2024, MUSC officially broke ground on a brand-new building for its College of Medicine—the first of its kind in a century! This shiny new facility is set to be a game-changer for current and future medical students, providing them with a dedicated space to learn, study, and connect with their peers. Dean Terrence Steyer shares a glimpse of the plans, saying, “This building will offer a true home for students, allowing them to not only learn but also relax and socialize.”

Spanning an impressive 186,000 square feet, this building will allow MUSC to potentially increase its class sizes and graduate more physicians—something South Carolina desperately needs. In fact, research shows there are currently 92 areas in the state that are lacking primary care providers, and an additional 162 doctors are needed just to meet the existing demand for healthcare.

Improving Student Health at Clemson University

But that’s not all! Just a stone’s throw away, the Redfern Health Center at Clemson University is also getting a much-needed makeover. Thanks to a freshly approved agreement between MUSC and Clemson, plans are underway to create a new health facility that will replace the aging Redfern Health Center. Currently, students and employees have to make do without urgent care facilities on their campus, but that’s set to change.

Dr. Patrick Cawley, the CEO of MUSC Health, explains, “We’re talking about developing a new building together, creating a new service that raises the standard for student health, athletic health, and employee health.” This ambitious project doesn’t just stop at healthcare; it will also foster research opportunities in human performance and wellness—a rapidly growing focus for both institutions.

A Leap Forward in Cellular Therapy

In a fascinating twist, MUSC is also enhancing its cutting-edge cellular therapy services. A new office and retail building will provide MUSC with the ability to quadruple its existing capacity for these essential treatments. MUSC President David J. Cole expressed excitement over the promising future of cellular therapy, saying, “This is about capacity. We need new labs to prepare for the future and meet the growing demands of healthcare.”

Currently, MUSC’s program utilizes manipulated and transplanted immune cells to treat cancer, but there are plans to expand this tactic to autoimmune diseases, bringing new hope to many patients. Moving this promising service to a new facility will allow MUSC to handle everything in-house, leading to better outcomes and faster delivery of healthcare services.
