Ah, Charleston! The charming city known for its historic streets, delightful food, and now, a spooky new attraction that’s bound to send shivers down your spine. That’s right, folks! Holy City Halloween is all set to haunt the old Meddin Bros. meatpacking warehouse on Woolfe Street, bringing a thrilling twist to the traditional Halloween experience.
Situated in a building with a colorful past, Holy City Halloween dives deep into the history of its venue. Originally opened in 1914 as an icehouse, the structure later transformed into a meatpacking facility and even was rumored to house a brothel! Can you imagine the stories these walls could tell? As event producer Lawson Roberts explains, “The story began writing itself,” after learning about the building’s history. The haunted house’s backstory imagines a sinister fate for Charleston’s unsuspecting citizens, entwining real history with a chilling tale that includes tainted meat and the undead.
As preparations ramped up, the excitement was palpable! On a sunny day at the end of September, performers were spotted getting ready for dress rehearsals. Fake blood flew and makeup was meticulously applied. Just picture the scene: the cast getting into character, with zombies being transformed and clowns donning their costumes. This kind of teamwork sets the stage for thrills that await guests, and just wait until you see the “butcher scene,” where the atmosphere gets delightfully sinister.
For those of you with younger kids or who prefer a less intense experience, fear not! Holy City Halloween has got you covered with a special family-friendly walkthrough earlier in the evening. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., kids aged 10-17 can enjoy a less spooky version filled with friendly ghosts, circus performers, and even a fortune teller! Plus, who can resist candy apples and cotton candy when it’s Halloween? When the clock strikes 7:30 p.m., however, it’s time for the thrills to amp up, as the haunted house takes a darker turn for the adults. Expect gory scenes and plenty of jump scares!
What makes Holy City Halloween even more special is its commitment to giving back. During its opening nights, $5 from every ticket sold will support those affected by Hurricane Helene. Additionally, they’ve partnered with local nonprofits, ensuring that your spooky experience also contributes to community support. “The city has been incredible on all fronts,” Boomer Oyler from Becket Agency highlighted, showcasing the local enthusiasm for this seasonal attraction.
With a dedicated team of around 80 people, Holy City Halloween ensures that everything runs like clockwork. From the orchestrated timing of group entries to the atmospheric lights and sounds, creating an immersive experience is a true science. Plus, the VIP experience allows guests to enjoy heavy hors d’oeuvres and drinks before skipping the lines for the haunted house! Now that sounds like a treat before the trick!
And if you thought it was just all fun and games, wait till you hear this! While preparing for the haunted house, the team reported some eerie experiences in the old building itself. “Make no mistake,” Roberts revealed, “This building is haunted and was haunted before we even walked in.” So, as you explore the haunted tale surrounded by costumed actors, keep an eye out—you might just encounter a ghost or two!
If you’re as excited as we are about Charleston’s newest haunted house, gather your friends and family, and prepare for an unforgettable night of chills. Holy City Halloween is here to make your Halloween season one to remember, and it awaits your arrival with open, undead arms.
So, gather your bravest friends, slap on your scariest costume, and get ready to experience the thrill of the haunt. Happy haunting!
