A Spooky History Reimagined
Holy City Halloween director Lawson Roberts shared that this year’s haunt will draw from the rich and eerie history of the building itself. Did you know the Woolfe Street Playhouse was once an old slaughterhouse? Roberts and his talented team put their creative minds together to craft a chilling storyline. Imagine what could happen if tainted meat from the past led to a terrifying undead outbreak in Charleston! Pretty wild, right?
The playhouse has had its share of unusual history; it also spent time as a brothel. Roberts and the crew didn’t shy away from incorporating these elements, creating a gruesomely entertaining spooky sex dungeon featuring torturous witches! With haunting actors portraying everything from horrific butchers to decaying zombies, guests can expect to experience an electrifying mix of horror.
Meet Monsieur Pate Prosciutto!
At the heart of this haunted journey is a character named Monsieur Pate Prosciutto and his band of mutated pig butchers. Roberts shared a fun backstory of Prosciutto, who journeyed from France to Charleston, originally for the famous shrimp and grits, but ended up sticking around for the excitement—and the scares! These pig butchers are here for some epic fun in this new seasonal attraction.
In a quirky twist, the creative team even brought the pig to life beyond the haunt itself, showcasing him on events all around Charleston. From riding a Lime bike down Rainbow Row to dining out at Home Team BBQ on Sullivan’s Island, this cheeky character is sure to have people talking!
Fun for the Whole Family
While the haunt is designed to thrill, there’s an emphasis on creating a family-friendly experience during earlier hours. The event planners want to make sure that families can enjoy a night out without having to venture far from home. Roberts noted that many families feel there’s a lack of activities for Halloween close to the city. So, they created an experience that caters to kids by transforming the spooky elements into fun, familiar themes. For instance, the mutated pigs become friendly little ones, and the witches channel “Hocus Pocus” vibes!
From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., families can explore the haunt without the spook factor being too overwhelming. However, as the sun sets, things take a turn! The environment becomes more thrilling and gory, offering adventure seekers a true haunted experience once it gets dark.
