Charleston, S.C. is buzzing with excitement as students from the Charleston County School District are breaking records like never before! A recent report has revealed that the graduation rate for the class of 2024 has hit a remarkable 88.8%, marking the district’s highest on-time graduation rate to date. This is a notable 3.2% increase from the past three years, proving that hard work and determination are paying off big for our future leaders!
This comprehensive report doesn’t just stop at the numbers; it digs deep into who is making these successes possible. By looking at the experiences of different student groups, it highlights those who have faced challenges yet are overcoming them brilliantly. Students experiencing poverty have seen a significant 5.3-point increase in their on-time graduation rates. But it doesn’t stop there! Students with disabilities are seeing a jaw-dropping 9.4-point increase over the last three years. Even multilingual learners are making strides with their 1.6-point increase. It’s inspiring to see such progress!
Furthermore, if we break things down even more, we see timely graduation is also improving among different ethnic groups. Hispanic students have achieved an impressive 5.8-point increase compared to their white and Black classmates. White students enjoyed a 3-point increase, while Black students saw their rates rise by 2.7-points. Together, it shows that every student is getting closer to that cap-and-gown moment!
But graduation is only the first step! The Charleston County School District isn’t just about getting students to walk across that stage; it also wants to ensure they’re ready to tackle the real world. The report looks at college readiness as well, specifically in terms of English proficiency. A fabulous 83% of students are now proficient in English, which is a 6.7-point increase from the previous year. How fantastic is that?
Moreover, language learning is on the rise, with 48% of students learning a second language, showing a 5.2-point increase from last year. This is not just good news for students, but for the whole community as we become more connected and culturally aware!
The report also separates students into general education and special education categories when measuring college preparedness. Among general education students, an impressive 84% experienced a 6.8-point increase in readiness, while special education students showed a significant 7.8-point increase, reaching 42.7% college readiness. This demonstrates the commitment to ensuring that all students, regardless of background, are equipped for their next adventures!
When examining race and poverty status, the report tells an encouraging tale. A fantastic 72% of Black students are now considered college-ready, which is a staggering 17.3-point increase from the previous year! Meanwhile, Hispanic students saw a 13-point increase, white students enjoyed a 4.4-point increase, while students categorized as “other” had an incredible 11.6-point surge.
Lastly, the study reveals that a whopping 92% of students not facing poverty are college and career-ready, reflecting a 7.5-point increase. Meanwhile, students experiencing poverty have shown an impressive 14.8-point improvement in their readiness for both college and the workforce! Overall, 50.8% of students in the district are college-ready, and 76.9% are prepared for careers.
With such great progress, the Charleston County School District Board of Trustees is set to meet soon to discuss these fantastic findings in more detail. It’s clearly an exciting time for our students and the community as a whole!
