Charleston is buzzing with excitement and a hint of sadness as Brandon Alston, better known as Fresh, prepares to embark on a new journey to Atlanta. After three vibrant years building his sustainable fashion brand, Fresh Prince Fits Designs, in this welcoming city, Alston has decided it’s time to spread his wings and explore new horizons. But before he heads off, he’s ensuring that his Charleston community is part of the farewell celebration with a series of fun-filled events throughout October.
Alston has planned an impressive lineup of events, showcasing the creativity and community spirit of Charleston. These events give locals a chance to not only say goodbye but also to engage in the exciting world of sustainable fashion. From live sewing and customization sessions to a creatives’ swap meet, there’s something for everyone.
Kicking off the festivities is the Fresh Prince Fits Designs Farewell Pop-Up Event combined with a unique Tiny Desk concert on a date to be announced later this month. Here, attendees can snag their favorite pieces from Alston’s collection at discounted prices. But that’s not all! Everyone will have the chance to get hands-on experience by personalizing garments with unique patches, making each piece stand out even more.
Adding to the experience, the event will feature a Tiny Desk-style concert featuring some of Charleston’s best local musicians, including B.A.S.I.C, COSMO, and Jack. It’s not just a chance to shop, but a night to celebrate creativity and community, all while enjoying local talent!
From October 21st to 24th, prepare for a wonderful experience at Monster Records as the LIVELIHOOD PROJECT comes to life. This exhibition showcases a fantastic collaboration among Alston, local musician Mike Live, and the screen printing business Eyeland Graphics. Each piece in the exhibit thoughtfully translates five tracks from Mike Livelihood’s album The Green Tape into wearable art, inviting viewers to engage with fashion like never before.
Not only are the unique hoodies visually stunning, but each piece also comes with built-in headphones connected to an MP3 player that plays the song inspiring the design. How cool is that? You’ll get a chance to see and hear the stories behind these garments during the exhibit, plus a chance to witness a live DJ set and performances by talented artists, including a special guest performance by Appollo Valdez during the closing event on October 24th.
Mark your calendars for October 19th for the much-anticipated FPF Farewell Creatives Swap Meet. This event welcomes local artists and creatives to bring pieces they’re looking to trade or sell, fostering a sense of community while supporting one another’s creativity. Expect to enjoy live music, DJ sets, and performances throughout the day, alongside tasty food and drinks. With exclusive Fresh Prince Fits tees and sweatshirts up for grabs, plus an auction of the custom Livelihood Project hoodies, this is not an event to miss!
Alston’s journey began as a tribute to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and has evolved into a significant movement promoting sustainable fashion. Each piece tells its own story, reworking once-loved clothing into something new and unique, further emphasizing the notion of sustainability in fashion. His work has previously been showcased in the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art and he played a key role in costume design for various local theater productions and especially for CofC’s basketball coach Pat Kelsey.
As Fresh wraps up this chapter in Charleston, his farewell events provide a wonderful opportunity for communities to come together, celebrate creativity, and support one another one last time before he heads to Atlanta. Whether you’re interested in sustainable fashion, creative expressions, or just want to enjoy a lovely time out, there’s something in store for everyone. Come join the fun and celebrate all that Fresh Prince Fits Designs has brought to Charleston!
