Among those stepping up to the plate is a remarkable local hero, Rose Bankston.
A Passion Born from Personal Experience
Rose Bankston has been fostering children for an impressive 29 years. Reflecting on her own childhood, she mentioned, “When I was younger I had a pretty tumultuous childhood. It was a lot different back then.” Now almost 70, Rose took the challenges she faced and turned them into motivation to foster children who may be going through similar struggles.
“There was a lady who helped me, a home health nurse at one of the clinics I went to. She talked to me and encouraged me and made me feel like I was important,” Rose says, recalling the woman who played a pivotal role in her life. This encounter became a defining moment, leading her to promise herself that she’d make a difference when she grew older.
Making a Commitment to Foster Care
As the holiday season approaches, Rose, like many foster parents, reflects on the impact their homes could make. The S.C. Youth Advocacy Program (SCYAP) is a notable organization working towards the welfare of foster children. The program emphasizes that every child deserves not only shelter but a permanent home where they can thrive.
According to John Connery, the special projects director at SCYAP, fostering isn’t just a temporary arrangement. “Well, you really have to make a commitment. We call it a ‘heartfelt calling.’” Connery believes that fostering goes beyond fulfilling a legal requirement. It’s about truly caring and being there for the child in every aspect.
Journey of a Foster Parent
Fostering seems like a big responsibility, particularly for those who already have children, but for Rose, the motivation is clear. “I think about myself — I could’ve gone on a whole different path because I had nobody to love me,” she recalls. Her undying dedication to nurturing others shines through. Her simple message to potential foster parents? “When you decide to take in any child, that child becomes your family.”
The bond formed between a foster parent and child can be life-changing. “They may not remember the particulars about what brought them into care, but they’re going to remember whether you loved them or not,” she emphasizes. Rose believes that it is vital for foster parents to genuinely love the children they take in.

Sadly, as of September, over 1,800 children in South Carolina are in need of temporary or permanent foster care placements, with Charleston County accounting for 126 of those children. Connery points out that many prospective foster parents might not realize they qualify. “You basically have to be 21 years of age or older. You can be single, married, or have a life partner. There’s no bias around these issues!” he explains.
The S.C. Youth Advocacy Program has resources readily available to support foster families, ensuring that they have the tools they need to succeed. From financial support to medical assistance and telehealth therapy, the program aims to provide a community for those willing to take on this heartwarming journey.
