Land & Sea Experience Elevates Local Charleston Food Scene

The local food scene of Charleston is in the spotlight following a unique Land & Sea experience. First-of-its-kind to Charleston, the event celebrates the richness of the city’s traditional cuisine by shedding light on its roots, specifically the sea and farmland where the food is sourced.

A Celebratory Collaboration

The Land & Sea experience is a brainchild of Marvin C. Ross of Peculiar Pig Farm and Tia Clark of Casual Crabbing with Tia. Both of these professionals share a deep bond with the Lowcountry and the bounty of its land and sea.

Clark, a native Charlestonian, initially took to water for health reasons but then quickly developed a passion for crabbing. She began offering crabbing experiences on Airbnb, quickly gaining popularity and making it to the top four experiences on the platform. Clark firmly believes in establishing a bond with the food we consume, which she conveys through her outings.

Ross, the owner of Peculiar Pig and a fifth-generation farmer, also upholds a community-first approach in his endeavor. Renowned for his high-quality whole hog, numerous local Charleston restaurants source their pork from Ross’s Peculiar Pig.

The Land & Sea Experience

During the day-long event, Clark aims to get attendees to experience the sea and its bounties, while Ross will highlight South Carolina’s land and his locally produced pork. Peculiar Pig has hosted events in the past, but the Land & Sea experience is its first unique attempt that allows attendees to trace their food’s journey in a day.

Candice Crawford, Peculiar Pig’s general manager, detailed the course of the event by saying, “In the morning, everyone will go crabbing with Tia and then we will come to the farm to do a tour with Marvin.” The participants will get to relish a Lowcountry boil made with they catch in the morning, along with a hog roast cooked on site at the Peculiar Pig.

A Groundbreaking Venture

The Land & Sea experience was held on Saturday, April 20. Tickets were $200, and attendees got a chance to spend the day with Ross and Clark, which culminated with a grand dinner in the evening.

With this landmark culinary venture, the Land & Sea experience has ensured the local food scene of Charleston is recognized for its authentic roots and flavors. The perfect blend of nature and culture, this event will surely alter how locals and visitors appreciate Charleston’s gastronomic offerings.

This commendable initiative brings local food enthusiasts closer to their roots and paves the way for future collaborations that combine the love for food traditions with the importance of its sustainability and traceability.
